An Incredible Mining and Industrial Odyssey
Kinross’ Tasiast mine is an open-pit operation located in northwestern Mauritania, approximately 300 kilometres north of the capital Nouakchott. Since 2010, Kinross has invested heavily in making Tasiast a world-class mine, equipped with infrastructure and equipment that allow employees to work safely while maximizing sustainable value creation for all stakeholders. Today, Tasiast is one of the most productive gold mines on the African continent.

In line with Kinross’ core value of Putting People First, Tasiast always prioritizes the safety, well-being, and development of its employees and contractors. Completed in 2020, Tasiast’s four-year “Mauritanization Plan” ensured that Mauritanians have a preference in access to employment opportunities. As a result, nearly 97% of Tasiast’s employees are now Mauritanians, including in management positions.
Beyond the Mine
Kinross Tasiast is committed to responsible mining and sustainable value creation through regular collaboration with government officials, local authorities, and communities to benefit the economic and social development of Mauritania. As of 2022, Tasiast had invested nearly US$18.5 million in social and community development programs. In 2023, the Company completed construction of Kinross’ first full-scale solar plant at Tasiast, increasing the percentage of renewables in our energy mix.
