Electricians in the mining industry are responsible for installing and maintaining all electrical systems on the mines. They are responsible for ensuring that there is at all times a supply of power for all areas including generators, plants and accommodation sites.

They will also inspect, isolate, troubleshoot and repair all electrical components related to the successful running of power on the mine.

Typical Duties

  • May be required to support the commission and start up activities through the engineering construction and operational phases of the mine site
  • Ensure that all relevant permits, hazard assessments and related have been properly prepared and completed prior to beginning work
  • Repair and maintain all electrical equipment including switching, wiring as well as other electric devices or components of a mine
  • Troubleshooting electrical problems as well as repair and maintenance
  • Install and maintain lighting and electrical equipment
  • Install wiring and circuits
  • Ensure all electrical work is completed safely and according to occupational health and safety regulations
  • Read wiring diagrams to plan the layout of systems
  • Connect systems to the various power suppliers
  • Assist with troubleshooting and analysis of system faults
  • Monitor work done by outside contractors
  • Ensure fire alarms and emergency electrical systems are operational and working effectively

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to engage in physical activities of various nature
  • Electricians in mining may be required to spend a lot of time on site on the mines
  • Depending on the type of mine, Electricians may spend some time in the open above ground, or underground
  • May be required to work in hot humid conditions as well as outdoors during cold weather conditions
  • May be required to work at heights or in confirmed spaces
  • Electricians may be required from time to time to travel to and stay away from home for extended periods. They may be required to live on site away from home, or to work on a fly in fly out basis. FIFO commonly involves flying in for a certain period of time whilst the Electrician would be on site, and then flying home for periods when they are off work.
  • Electricians in mining may get to see the world as if working for large international companies, their job will often involve international travel
  • There is a high level of responsibility involved in being a n Electrician with a special emphasis on safety and the job can be demanding
  • May be required to work in awkward positions and concentrate for long periods of time

Educational Requirements

  • Before beginning formal education students interested in becoming an Electricians will need to have completed high school usually gain training through apprenticeship programs
  • Depending on where they are based most Electricians will need to obtain a technical certification as well completing various levels of apprenticeship to learn the trade
  • Electricians in most regions will be required to obtain a license from a state bard
  • Those interested in more senior roles such as in a management role or product development role should consider pursuing an associate‚Äôs degree
