Cowan International’s client, an international mining & metals major, has a need for a highly competent Senior Engineer, Mine Planning to play a key role at its operating mining complex in Northern Canada.

Reporting to the Chief Mine Engineer, the Senior Engineer, Mine Planning will perform critical in-depth mine planning functions as well as important pit and blast design work.
The incumbent will liaise with, monitor and coordinate an interdisciplinary owner-contractor team consisting of mine engineering, drill & blast, load & haul, surveying and geology personnel
FIFO Schedule = 2 weeks IN / 2 weeks OUT to multiple travel hubs in Quebec & Eastern Canada
Responsibilities of the Senior Engineer, Mine Planning
- Communicate, spearhead, design, develop, track, measure, maintain, adhere to and report on (to varying degrees) : short-, medium-, long-term mine plans; reporting systems; pit & waste dump designs; drill & blast and load & haul conformances; slope stability requirements; SOPs; health & safety requirements
- Monitor mining contractor performance and alignment with the mining plan
- Liaise closely with drill and blast personnel, ensuring optimal execution of designs/plans
- Immediately report any areas of concern or proposed improvements
- Show initiative, positivity, resilience, adaptability and cultural-sensitivity
- Show a team and problem-solving approach
- Be a proponent and example of the highest safety standards, ensuring safe and efficient operations
- Be readily accessible to operational personnel and be present in the field
- Perform audits and inspections when needed
- Grow along with this site in responsibility and knowledge
Experience and Competencies required for the Role
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mine Engineering
- >7 years of mine planning
- >5 years of open pit, truck & shovel mining
- Expert knowledge and experience with GEMCOM or other comparably similar mine planning software
- Prior field experience is essential
- Drill and blast design experience would be advantageous
- Experience working with mining contractors would be advantageous
- Strong commitment to HSE standards and sustainable development
- Excellent communication, coordination and administration skills
- Bilingualism (English-French) would be ideal, but not essential
