Reporting directly to the General manager, the successful candidate with have the managerial responsibility and accountability for all operational aspects of underground and open pit mining and maintenance with the objective of safely achieving production goals at three distinct mining operations that are unionized, non-union and contractor mining.

Essential Job Duties Include
  • Engaging in strategic planning and providing guidance and leadership to 3 mining operations to ensure each operation achieves budgeted/planned tonnage. This includes the continuation of the ramp up of the Borden Mine, addressing challenges of recovery, dilution and costs at the Hoyle Pond Mine and continuous improvement at the Hollinger Mine.
  • Implements and holds reports accountable for a comprehensive health, safety and loss prevention program and an environmental performance program.
  • Proactively seeks, and ensures indirect reports seek, processes and procedures to improve the cost effectiveness of the department(s).
  • Leads and manages the mining team by clearly defining expectations of the mining staff's roles and responsibilities.
  • Actively analyzes past incidents and known risks, and ensures direct reports are doing the same, and actively pursues methods to reduce incidents and risk potential.
  • Coach, mentor and motivate teams to achieve mining and business targets.
  • Manages succession planning for direct reports.
  • Manages and organizes the mining team to optimize the efficiency of the operation.
  • Leads by example and ensures the mining team is living the Newmont values.
  • Leads the mining team by developing and communicating a strategic plan.
  • Ensures compliance of company policies and procedures.
  • Helps develop and monitors and determines methods to meet budgeted/cost estimates.
  • Promotes and leads continuous improvement practices.
  • Leads and manages change.
  • Works with and interacts well with other groups, such as Environmental, H&S, Human Resources, External Relations and Technical Services.
  • Continually investigates and implements ways to improve the effectiveness of the mine and mining team and seeks best practices.
  • Forms, develops, monitors and coordinates a team of mining staff professionals.
  • Ensures production achieves budgeted/planned amounts to feed processing plants. Ensures the grade to the processing plants is as budgeted to achieve production.
  • Ensures compliance with all provincial and federal laws for safety, employment and environment.

Training & Experience
  • Degree in Mining Engineering and 8-10 years of mining experience with experience as an operational superintendent primarily in underground mining.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment would be an asset.
  • Keen business sense toward maximizing cash flow, maximizing net asset value, minimizing unit costs, and maximizing earnings.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
