Mission for this Position

Report to Power & Distribution Superintendent/ Manager and provide Electrical Engineering and support within the Power & Distribution Department.

Provide technical expertise in power generation, distribution and automation.

Support department's requirements to ensure tasks are compliance with code.

Provide technical advice and support to other division i.e. Crusher, Shiploader and other production critical units.

Review and Approve LOTO procedure to ensure safe execution of work.

Lead field troubleshooting and commissioning.

Main Accountabilities

  • Support BIM operations through priorities set by Superintendent and Department Manager
  • Assist and support Power & Distribution superintendent and Manager.
  • Provide site-wide electrical engineering support, including but not limited to:
    • Electrical Reliability issue investigation and improvement.
    • Technical support on Diesel power generation up to 16MW capacity.
    • Technical support for site wide electrical and automation infrastructure.
    • Electrical distribution (up to 13.8 kV), engineering, modifications and monitoring.
    • SCADA system development through PLC and data archive integration.
    • Process control systems design, optimization and troubleshooting.
    • Management of Electrical Projects which include design, calculation, analysis and cost estimation.
    • Lead field troubleshooting and commissioning of electrical and automation projects.


  • Develop, integrate and support PI integration of different process system.
  • Investigate electrical and control issues to determine potential reliability improvements and execute approved improvement initiatives.
  • Develop and monitor appropriate KPI's to measure Electrical Reliability site wide.
  • Monitor Power consumption and balance and identify opportunities for energy reduction and energy efficiency improvements.
  • Support reliability investigations by others with Electrical Engineering expertise and assist in the development and implementation of solutions identified as required.
  • Support the development of Electrical component standards and performance requirements.
  • Inspect, plan corrective measures for new and existing equipment installations for Canadian Electrical Code compliance and appropriate electrical protection devices.
  • Facilitate and lead team activities and rapid improvement events as required.
  • Conduct observations and analyze data in order to bring recommendations for improvement opportunities forward to the team.
  • Track, communicate and share results and lessons learned - ensures successes are published and communicated to all employees.
  • Identify sources of information, possible interfaces and detailed process descriptions.
  • Assist in interpreting facts and information gathered to understand current state and defined future states
  • Build, sustain and leverage day to day relationships and communications with partners and individuals within area of immediate responsibility to contribute to business development.
  • Focus upon process improvements to enhance productivity, increase revenue, enhance safety and reduce cost, consistent with the strategic direction of the company.
  • Work with regional and mine site leadership and multi-functional teams to identify, develop, execute and complete selected improvement projects.
  • Act as a change agent to instill an operational excellence, performance improvement culture throughout the organization.
  • Provide findings and recommend room for improvement to superintendent and manager.
  • Act as an engineering oversight to ensure compliance to HSE, Mine Acts, CSA and CEC Codes.
  • Lead complex field automation troubleshooting and provide recommendation for improvement.


Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Present findings formally to Senior and Executive Management teams.
  • Work with Planners to develop appropriate electrical PM's for improved equipment reliability.
  • Perform benchmarking activities.
  • Perform various project administration tasks, including coordinating meetings, taking meeting minutes, forwarding communication releases, and perform maintenance of project tracking logs (i.e. issues, change control, etc.) in order to satisfy project management processes.


Main Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineer Required
  • 7-10 years' experience field commissioning and troubleshooting experience
  • P.ENG designation with PEO, AEGBC, APEGA or other recognized affilation with ability for registration in Nunavut/NWT required
  • Experience in Power Systems Engineering required. I.e Load flow, short-circuit, protective relay coordination, Arc-Flash analysis
  • Experience in protective relay settings and configuation required. I.e SEL, GE Multilin, Eaton EGR/EDR series
  • Experience in Control and Automation required. I.e Siemens S7-1500 series, Allen Bradley Conrologix
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office required
  • SAP experience preferred
  • PI OSI Soft module experience preferred
  • Excellent relationship management skills: listening, diplomacy, patience and negotiation.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with cross functional groups to successfully manage project deliverables.
  • Exceptional analytical skills at both strategic and functional levels.
  • Proven ability to lead and work through others without direct reporting relationship to achieve business goals utilizing persuasion and influencing skills.
  • Knowledge in organizational design and change management principles and methodologies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with all levels of the organization.
  • Lean manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Understand reliability and maintenance concepts.
  • Ability to develop and run complex projects from concept to commissioning and operation.
  • 2-week Fly-in, Fly-out rotation
  • Candidate shall be knowledgeable and competent in the systems and equipment noted below:
    • 8 kV power generation and distribution: o design, maintenance operation and troubleshooting
      • relevant electrical codes and monitoring systems
      • Power plant switchgear and MCC
    • Control systems Knowledge: o PLC's: Allen Bradley (control logix and compact logix), Siemens (S7-1500).
      • HMI: Panelview & Magelis
      • Thorough knowledge of programming and troubleshooting all systems noted.
        • New program development, and optimization of existing programs.
