Our Vale HSER Department is currently seeking a:

Senior Safety Specialist (Mines), this position will be based in Mississauga office.

The Opportunity:

As a champion of safety management, this role will support safety programs to sustain and improve safety performance, reduce occupational safety risks to the business and address the challenges facing our organization in achieving our goal of zero harm.

This role will support the activities of the Vale Base Metals Safety team in maintaining and applying the Integrated Management System to ensure effective hazard identification and risk analysis, management of the risks through the use of Critical Activity Requirements and emergency response management.

Accountabilities:

  • Support Vale Base Metals Health, Safety, and Operational Risk department in alignment with Vale’s Life Matters Most goals.
  • Support the standardization and continuous improvement in the following key aspects of the Integrated Management System (IMS) as they apply to Occupational Safety at Vale Base Metals mining sites:
    • Hazard identification and risk analysis through qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative risk assessments;
    • Critical activity requirements (CAR) to control the risks associated with high potential risk activities;
    • Management of change;
    • Pre-startup and shutdown safety preparation and reviews; and
    • Emergency preparedness and response.
  • Identify, develop and communicate best practices in safety management.
  • Lead the investigation of significant safety incidents, review significant incident investigation reports, and compile facts and root causes. Based on findings rising from significant incident investigation, define and develop recommendations for preventative measures to reduce the risk of future significant incidents.
  • Work with operating sites to integrate and maintain IMS elements within operations.
  • Support centralized projects group and engineering functions to ensure compliance with Vale’s IMS program.
  • Build relationships with safety regulators and lead or participate in internal safety audits.
  • Be an internal safety consultant and mentor; assist Safety Supervisors to implement and maintain the IMS program at operating sites, monitor and report on IMS performance and key safety indicators, and support and continuously improve the effectiveness of the IMS program.

Education:
  • Ideal candidate will hold an Undergraduate Degree in the related field
  • Professional Designation like (P.ENG, CRSP CMSP, CET) or ability to become certified within 6 months


Experience:

8-10 years of related work experience

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Safety management experience at underground mining operations.
  • Understanding of operational site safety systems and programs.
  • Strong leadership, communication and influencing skills.
  • Experience with change management in large organizations.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong capability with Microsoft Office software.
  • Familiarity with Ontario Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
