Maintenance Mechanic – Underground Fixed Plant Systems will troubleshoot, and repair stationary equipment used in the underground and surface mining environment.  Equipment includes (but is not limited to), hoists, pumps, pumping and piping systems, compressors, conveyors, pockets and chute systems etc. and assist as required with the maintenance of other Hecla assets on the site.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Performs scheduled and un-scheduled maintenance activities.
  • Performs equipment lubrication, field repair, and preventative maintenance activities as required.
  • Read hydraulic schematics. Troubleshoot hydraulic systems, test hydraulic components, and repair the problems and components.
  • Maintain mine pumping systems. Perform weekly checks and maintenance, including repacking and adjusting stuffing boxes, bleeding air locks, and minor repairs.
  • Start and stop pumps and manage pump operation sequence.Troubleshoot problems, including bad valves, bad packing, low oil, water in oil, etc.Know proper procedure and safety concerns for shut down, repairs, and start up.
  • Maintenance of spray chambers.Install, repair, and start up spray chambers, including piping manifolds, pumps, chamber, and tank.
  • Maintenance of compressors and compressor plant.Know compressor operating principles and controls.Understand safety switches and trip trap indicators.Know proper procedures and safety concerns for shut down, repairs, and start up.Troubleshoot and repair basic system problems, including cooling system, load regulation, and valves.
  • Hoists and conveyances; Perform daily conveyance inspection. Perform inspection after E Stop on ropes, cappel, safety dogs and conveyance. Assist on rope cuts and changes using procedure forms. Complete weekly services of hoist, ropes and conveyances.
  • Maintenance and repair of pockets and load cells.
  • Maintenance and repair of conveyor systems.
  • Machinery installation; Must know proper procedures for installation of components and electric motors.
  • Perform dial indicator alignment of couplings.
  • Properly size and install belts and align pulleys.
  • Maintains a clean work area and is accountable for company and personal tools utilized to perform the work.
  • Performs data input as required for inventory and cost control tracking.
  • Completes required maintenance reports and logs.
  • Tests all equipment repairs as applicable.
  • Perform various welding and fabrication tasks.
  • Access equipment information using electronic devices (i.e. laptop computer, tablet).
  • Use of measuring equipment, including micrometers, calipers, etc.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High School graduate or equivalent. 

Previous experience in a mine setting preferred.

Journeyman qualifications in Millwright or another Mechanical discipline.

Must be able to access equipment information using electronic devices (i.e. laptop computer, tablet).

Computer literate with at least basic skills in Excel, Word and MS Outlook.
