Description:Safety, Health & Environmental Responsibilities AND Accountabilities
Include, but are not limited to:

  • Display due diligence in safety & health, and environmental matters and lead by example to ensure the successful implementation of the Safety & Health Management System, and the Environmental Management System
  • Promote open communication and cooperation
  • Ensure that all employees, contractors, and visitors are informed of safety, health, and environmental issues on site and distribute relevant safety, health, and environmental information
  • Ensure Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) are completed for appropriate tasks and participate in the process
  • Undertake safety and health audits and inspections and interact with personnel concerning improving work practices and following up on action items
  • Support all personnel in achieving and maintaining desired safety, health, and environmental outcomes
  • Recognize superior safety, health, and environmental performance to help increase commitment and participation
  • Manage, notify, report, and investigate incidents and hazards in a timely manner as required
  • Manage compliance with safety and health requirements and ensure issues are being addressed prior to commencement of work (such as permits completed, isolations checked, and tagging completed)
  • Manage compliance with federal and state environmental regulations to ensure a field presence on a routine basis
  • Verify that personnel hold the appropriate qualifications and licenses
  • Monitor the safe use and control of all tools and equipment
  • Promote and assist in the implementation of site safety initiatives and safety-monitoring tools
  • Attend and monitor pre-start and toolbox meetings, ensuring they are conducted, and minutes are prepared, issued, and action items developed as appropriate
  • Assist in preparing and contributing to monthly safety, health and environmental reporting

Departmental Responsibilities

  • Project planning and Scheduling
  • Infrastructure Management – Identify necessary expansions or deficiencies in existing infrastructure and plan, design, and manage construction of remediation efforts. May involve utilizing onsite staff, and operations resources, or may require consultants and/or contractors.Infrastructure includes:
    • Tailings and Mine Waste Facilities – dry stack or filtered tailing facility, engineered mine waste storage
    • Water Systems – Potable, sewage, storm water, and process water collection, conveyance, and treatment systems
    • Roads – Haul roads, maintenance roads, and bridges
    • Port Facilities – Deepwater port, barge loading facilities, commuter boat dock, and float plane dock
  • Operations Support – Provide technical support for in operations and maintenance of the site infrastructure.
  • Environmental Support – Provide technical support for the environmental group. Includes ensuring permit compliance and developing remediation efforts and improvements if environmental controls are deficient.
  • Mill and Underground Mine Support – Support other departments as needed.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualizes and designs the main features of a project, then performs and directs the work of drawing plans, writing scopes of work, writing specifications, preparing cost estimates and tracking systems. In the field, they participate in surveying, site investigation, or construction inspection.  They may also sample and test soil or construction materials in the laboratory or the field.  They may also prepare reports on funding, scheduling, scope of work, environmental impact, risk assessment programs and excavation plans.
  • Reporting functions include quality control, schedule, capital project reporting, cost tracking, inspection and closure reports and others as necessary.
  • Integrates company policies into design and subsequent construction and maintenance activities.
  • A primary responsibility is to communicate with applicable stakeholders such as operations personnel, engineering staff, consulting engineers, and mine management, and must be able to accurately and efficiently convey ideas and information. The successful candidate must be able to communicate effectively in writing, in person, and in other circumstances as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Mine Engineering or related field
  • 5 or more years of engineering experience
  • Preferable but not required- Multidisciplinary Engineering experience.
  • Familiar with scheduling, project planning and construction techniques.Ability to utilize or learn various software (MS Office Suite, MS project, SEDCAD, Civil 3d (AutoCAD), GIS, DESWIK,

Competencies

  • Proven leadership skills.
  • Analytical and strong organizational skills, with excellent written and verbal ability.
  • Proficiency with related software tools.
  • Excellence in time management; attention to detail and the ability to learn quickly.
  • Knowledge of regulatory permitting process including NEPA.

Work Environment & Job Schedule
Employees may be frequently exposed to underground work environments; outside weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions; extreme cold, extreme heat, potentially hazardous wildlife; moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; explosives and vibration.  The noise level in most work environments is usually very loud. This position may occasionally require work on nights or weekends.

The intended regular work schedule for this position is four days on, three days off (4/3) with daily transportation from the Auke Bay dock in Juneau.
