Who we are:

Downer Defence Systems provides a broad range of professional and managed services, asset sustainment and estate upkeep services to the Australian Defence Force, the New Zealand Defence Force and other government agencies.

About the Role:

Downer Defence are currently seeking an Assistant Project Manager to contribute to the delivery of AIR3503 - Distributed Ground Station Australia (DGS-AUS). AIR3503 is a project to develop and deliver an intelligence fusion and dissemination hub for airborne-generated sensor data. The project has achieved Gate 0 and is aiming for its next approval gate in Q4 2021. The DGS-AUS is a new capability for the RAAF, with the technology being new and cutting edge.

The Assistant Project Manager will:
  • Have extensive knowledge of Defence projects and the Defence Capability Life Cycle (CLC) including drafting of CLC documentation in reparation for Gate submissions.
  • Manage a range of project activities and coordinate project inputs in accordance with organisational practices, methods and standards appropriate to the complexity of the project.
  • Manage schedule, risk, budget and resources, preparation of briefings, submissions, reports and returns relating to the project progress and issues in accordance with organisational requirements.
  • Apply established technical, operational, professional and administrative activities, procedures, practices and project management methodologies (including the CLC, PRINCE2 and PMBOK).
  • Identify risks and opportunities and take account of these in planning, decision-making and priority setting.
  • Build and sustain stakeholder engagement including the ability to communicate with influence and negotiate effectively. Coordinate Integrated Project Management (IPT) meetings and prepare/distribute IPT meeting documentation.
  • Work collaboratively and build effective relationships with team members, the Project Sponsor, Partner Delivery Agencies.
  • Analyse project performance against agreed plans and develop and initiate strategies to achieve project outcomes.
  • Provide input into the development of project planning, performance, cost and schedule documents, work breakdown structures, project information management in accordance with agreed procedures and performance standards.
  • Prepare correspondence, briefs and reports as directed including submissions and documents for higher delegate and committee consideration.
  • Analyse and ensure compliance with legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks.

Essential Criteria:
  • Project Management Degree or equivalent.
  • Experience working on Defence major capital acquisition projects
  • Experience with the Defence Capability Life Cycle and governance requirements.
  • Excellent Verbal and written communication skills.


Candidates must be Australian citizens with a minimum NV2 security clearance or be eligible to obtain an Australian Government Security Clearance prior to commencement of engagement. Applicants residing outside of Australia or non-citizens will not be considered.
