Summary

Barr Engineering Co. is seeking a geologist to join its Minneapolis office in May 2021 and undertake challenging and progressive work on projects related to the investigation, evaluation, and remediation of contaminated sites. Assignments may include working as an individual or as part of a project team to assist with any of the following tasks: onsite investigations of contaminated soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, and vapor, including oversight of well installation and sample collection; aquifer test performance and analysis; numerical modeling of groundwater flow and fate and transport; and preparation of drilling logs, geologic maps, cross-sections, and technical reports. Fieldwork opportunities for this position will be year-round and require some out-of-town travel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in geology, hydrogeology, engineering, or related degree, or ability to complete master’s degree within one calendar year
  • Academic coursework directly related to the job responsibilities described above and successful completion of a field or research course
  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills, excellent communication skills, ability to write well, and attention to detail
  • A flexible working style and the ability to work independently and with teams of specialists to meet client and project needs
  • Willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedules to meet project needs (up to 25% travel and 50% field work expected; project needs will vary seasonally and over time)
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship
  • Acceptable driving record

Preferred Qualifications

  • Thesis, coursework, or previous work experience directly related to groundwater flow and/or fate and transport modeling using finite-difference or finite-element methods
  • Experience in aquifer test implementation and analysis
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with GIS and programing experience using Python or FORTRAN


NOTE:Applicants must be able to work in remote locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction and mining sites and to enter and work within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste-disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. Safety training will be provided before being assigned to work on these sites.
