Description

Under general supervision, performs routine and non-routine chemical and/or metallurgical analytical tasks at assigned site.

  • Prepare samples for analysis/run tests using appropriate techniques and perform sample preparation for quality control program
  • Perform routine chemical and/or metallurgical analysis and reporting
  • Provide operation diagnostics and adjustments for tests and analytical equipment
  • Maintain laboratory instrumentation and equipment; diagnose problems, calibrate and retest as appropriate; ensure lab has appropriate supplies for operation; in some locations may act as Weigh Master to receive and ship materials in SAP
  • May compile, assign, and track received materials to smelter in limited locations
  • Assist in laboratory personnel training
  • Perform other duties as required


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • One (1) year of direct lab experience OR
  • Associate's related degree which includes six (6) months of related lab experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of lab equipment, lab protocols and techniques appropriate to assigned areas
  • Demonstrated ability to train others in particular area of lab
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions


Preferred

Analytical Lab Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience performing titrations
  • Experience with atomic spectroscopy (ICP-OES, AA, XRF)
  • Experience with computer applications relevant to lab work (STARLIMS, Excel, Business Objects, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely with hazardous chemicals.

Sample Lab Preferred Qualifications

  • Preferred - Computer/SAP Skills (MS Office Word and Excel)
  • Sample Preparation equipment (scales, grinding, pulverizing)
  • Willing to work 12 hour rotation (day shift)


Criteria/Conditions

  • Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures given in English
  • Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards
  • Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment
  • Work is in a mine or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear and see
  • Occasionally may be required to lift, push, pull or maneuver moderately heavy objects (up to 40 pounds) during the course of the workday
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required
  • Freeport-McMoRan promotes a drug/alcohol free work environment through the use of mandatory pre-employment drug testing and on-going random drug testing
