Does the idea of performing hands-on, dynamic, field-based Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) work on one of our large upstream sites excite you? If you have a passion for implementing systems and tools that foster a culture of safety in a complex organization and want to help maintain our Journey to Zero safety incidents, then we have a great role for you.

You will use your expertise to :
  • Develop, implement and steward effective and efficient systems, processes and tools for managing EH&S risks and hazards
  • Provide expertise and guidance for the identification and management of EH&S risks and oversee that risks and hazards are being managed adequately
  • Collaborate with EH&S functional support advisor's and specialists to effectively integrate safety barriers and controls into the execution plans
  • Create awareness among all Suncor functional support staff pertaining to the tools used for managing risks and hazards
  • Perform audits, self-assessments and help leaders understand these processes (e.g., serious injury fatality (SIF) control verifications, field level hazard assessment audits, safety observations, inspections, etc.).
  • Participate in the EH&S responsibilities required within the contractor management process
  • Perform incident root cause analysis and coach incident owners accordingly, helping assign corrective actions

Must-haves (minimum requirements):
  • Six or more years of experience with EH&S related to industrial work
  • Advanced experience with hazard identification, including assessment and control
  • A post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety or related discipline
  • Experience in providing hazard management support at an active work-site
  • Proven knowledge of large-scale oil and gas industrial hazards and controls in the context of the applicable EH&S legislation
  • Non-authoritative leadership skills to influence, persuade and facilitate change through building high-trust relationships
  • Demonstrated communication skills, both oral and written, as well as strong analytical and change management skills
  • Strong initiative and perform well with limited supervision, and have high emotional intelligence and self-awareness, with the ability to influence others
  • A continuous improvement mindset and can seek greater knowledge and understanding of the systems, process and hazards in the workplace
  • Alignment with our values : safety above all else, stronger together, operational discipline, curiosity and lifelong learning, and act with integrity

Preference for:
  • Experience in identifying and managing safety risks and hazards in the Oil and Gas industry
  • Advanced skills related to the identification of Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) hazards and controls.
  • Experience developing and implementing EH&S systems, processes and tools related to transportation, accommodation and warehousing
  • Advanced skills in emergency management, contractor management, incident investigation and root cause analysis
  • A Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation

Where you'll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:
  • You will work out of our Base Plant Mine in Fort McMurray , Alberta
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
  • If you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory. Relocation support will be provided; we offer highly competitive housing assistance to eligible individuals
