Newmont operations in South America are trough two different companies, Newmont Peru SRL and Minera Yanacocha SRL.

Newmont Peru SRL was founded in 1983 as an exploration mining company whose main objective is obtain new gold reserves.

Minera Yanacoca SRL start their operations in 1992 in Cajamarca City partnership with Buenaventura, is the largest gold mine in South America.

Purpose

To lead the execution of health and safety programs, systems and assurance to manage existing and emerging risks across the South American portfolio

Essential Duties

Strategy
  • Lead the development of the regional health and safety risk strategies, policy and practices focusing on exposure to fatality, illness and injury risks
  • Design the integration of existing and future health and safety tools eg FRM and Critical Learning (in partnership with HR, S&ER, Legal, OT & IT)
  • Provide strategic safety subject matter expertise on regional and global initiatives
  • Review end to end processes to identify innovation or technology efficiency opportunities
  • Implement effective regional governance processes for health and safety risk strategies, policy and practices

Functional leadership
  • Assume core member of the global HSS leadership team
  • Lead the regional HS function and provide technical mentoring, career mapping and talent management

Analysis
  • Undertake comprehensive analysis of regional and site-based trends in health, safety and security risks to support performance improvement across the business
  • Integrate systems and processes (system design) based on analysis and learnings eg critical learnings into FRM

Stakeholder Engagement
  • Actively represent Newmont on regional technical industry bodies eg chamber of minerals and embassy office of security
  • Actively partner with internal stakeholders on improving operational support and external stakeholders eg OEMs to improve industry practices


Training & Experience

  • Tertiary qualification in science, engineering, health and or safety
  • Operational experience in mining, processing (and underground is desirable)
  • Experience in organizational risk management
  • Advanced communication and influencing skills
  • Demonstrated ability to implement technical and behavioural health and safety programs across global operations
  • Experience catering for varied risks profiles across an organisation (underground/open-cut, projects/operations)
  • Experience directly and indirectly leading and inspiring a team of technical SMEs
  • Analytical capability to identify emerging safety risks
  • Experience in leading a diverse, multi-cultural team
  • Spanish Speaking desirable
