About the role

We are looking for a Laboratory Operator to join the Hope Downs 1 Fixed Plant Team to collect and prepare samples for physical and chemical analysis to a high standard to identify tonnage grade and in accordance with the safety, environmental and statutory requirements. This role is a great opportunity for an individual with an understanding of quality control and quality assurance. This role will be offered on FIFO roster - 8 days on, 6 off, 7 nights on, 7 off.

Reporting to the Supervisor Laboratory, you will be:
  • Actively working within Rio Tinto's Safety Policies and Procedures and support team members in the same manner to achieve and maintain zero injury and occupational illness.
  • Preparing and analysing process plant and pit samples appropriately
  • Performing equipment checks and calibration checks in order to maintain the continuous operation of the sampling devices, transport systems and robotic preparation cells
  • Collecting and preparing samples in accordance with procedures, ensuring samples are totally representative
  • Monitoring, fault finding and escalating non-conformance's that occur with preparation and analytical equipment or non-compliance's with analytical data
  • Communicating with Geology, Grade control, Production and Metallurgical teams to ensure the quality of sample and grade of iron ore is produced at required limits to be transported to the coast

About you

To succeed in this role, you will have:
  • An Australian Manual C-Class Drivers licence
  • A Certificate III or higher in Laboratory Operations
  • Technical and analytical experience in flux fusion, Leco TGA, XRF, manual sample preparation using RSD's (Rotary Sample Dividers), Rocklabs crusher/splitter, moisture and sizings analysis
  • Experience with computers systems such as Starlims, SAP, FDMS, TIKS, SuperQ and ChemAlert
  • Experience in quality assurance or quality control
  • A strong commitment to safety systems and procedures
