The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Process Superintendent II (Maintenance), to join our Sudbury Operations.

The Process Superintendent II (Maintenance) will direct the maintenance teams in the provision of planned and unplanned maintenance services for the Smelter Complex. These services facilitate the effective operation of the plant to meet equipment performance and production targets.

The Process Superintendent II (Maintenance) is responsible for managing the health and safety of their team and employees and contractors, while delivering on existing and future maintenance requirements and working with the Asset Management framework to achieve the required business plan outcomes.

Although previous experience in mining or an industrial setting is considered an asset, we also appreciate that diversity of thought comes from our differences – and that’s what makes us great!

Education:
  • The ideal candidate will have a minimum Education in an Engineering or Technical discipline.

Experience:
  • Minimum 8 to 10 years in a maintenance or operational role.
  • 5-7 yeas of progressive leadership experience in maintenance or engineering within industrial environments.
  • Hold a trade qualification (Millwright/Industrial Mechanic) or tertiary qualification in a relevant maintenance field or engineering discipline.

Accountabilities:

General & Technical:
  • Monitors trends in the consumption of resources and the performance of those doing the work, whether they are internal or external, as well as monitoring maintenance outcomes, maintenance process parameters and inputs.
  • Assumes line accountabilities for the staff and hourly workforce that identify, plan and execute maintenance work and select capital projects.
  • Monitor the execution of work by employees within their department and contractors employed by the department(s) to ensure safe practices are employed and make the necessary process changes if required.
  • Oversee the implementation of sound maintenance and work management principles to ensure best practices are implemented and to ensure effective maintenance execution.
  • Assist in developing annual shut plans and provide support in the timely execution of the plan.
  • Evaluate maintenance strategy effectiveness and recommend improvements to the maintenance strategy from the data analyzed.
  • Accountable for successful implementation of new processes and systems within their department. For existing systems, will monitor the workflows through one or more related processes as demands and resources change over time, reallocating resources to meet total outputs safely, efficiently and effectively.
  • Develop annual maintenance budgets and manage costs to deliver the budget commitment.
  • Manage a mix of processes, technology, funds and people to balance 1 year result requirements within 1 to 2 year improvement milestones.
  • Ensure coordination and routine maintenance of all mechanical work for Matte Processing, FBR, Acid Plant, Oxygen Plant and Utilities.

Safety and Compliance:
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and company policies and standards pertaining to health, safety and environment.
  • Work with the HSE Committee(s) to develop actions to improve safety, health and environment performance.

Leading People:
  • Incorporate Vale’s mission, vision and values into daily activities and decision-making processes.
  • This role is required to play a proactive leadership role to contribute to organizational, plant, and process improvements by working cooperatively with the operations, technical, engineering and planning teams to identify and implement potential improvements, through innovative problem solving and teamwork.
  • Lead and ensure behaviours of the team are consistent with the overall business behaviours.
  • Coaching and mentoring supervision and teams through practical visible leadership with an emphasis on safety.
  • Be courageous in taking corrective measures when necessary to address various issues of noncompliance (Safety, behaviours, etc.).
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills in order to engage team members and building a strong mechanical maintenance team in a fast paced, dynamic environment.
  • Contributes to the Succession Planning processes; advises the manager on improving the capability of the supervisory team to meet future needs through selection and development.
  • Provides performance feedback to team members and coach and counsel employees.
  • Facilitate and coach teams to progress to higher standards of work performance.

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, Teams, SAP.
  • Possess knowledge and experience with local safety and statutory regulations.
  • Sound knowledge and experience in asset management and capital management principles.
  • Knowledge of basic report creation and use of reporting tools i.e. Business Intelligence Reports and ERP Reports.
  • Ability to build influence and gain commitment to achieve outcomes across health & safety, planned maintenance tasks, contractor management and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to drive and implement changes to people, processes and tools aligned to strategy commitments of the maintenance department.
  • Seeks diverse perspectives and ways of working, draws on options and solutions from across industry, not just from one’s own area to solve problems.
