The Role

We are seeking a Senior Mine Geotechnical Engineer to support the Mine Geotechnical Operations, Geotechnical Design Projects and Technical Drilling teams and report directly to the Mine Geotechnical Superintendent. You will be expected to minimize the risk of geotechnical hazards (e.g. pit and dump slope failure) impacting on production and safety by providing technical expertise relating to the operational and design project aspects of the geotechnical section and managing and mentoring a highly skilled team of national professional and technical staff. The two key role responsibilities are:
  • Geotechnical Risk & Hazard Management

Identifying geotechnical hazards and managing the associated risks and includes implementing continuous improvement of geotechnical monitoring methods in a dynamic geothermal environment.
  • Geotechnical Designs and Projects Management

Undertaking geotechnical investigations and design work to provide input into medium and long term mine design process. Plan and manage geotechnical engineering projects on time and within budget. Providing geotechnical advice and input for mine critical projects such as major perimeter drains design, seepage barrier study, marine dump investigation, phase investigations etc.

The Requirements
  • Tertiary qualified Bachelor of Science (Geology) or Engineering (Civil or Mining) - accreditation from the Institute of Engineers PNG Inc. will be completed as part of the work permit process.
  • A Postgraduate Degree in Geotechnical Engineering is highly desirable.
  • AT least 7 years' experience in geotechnical operations and design of open pit mines with at least 3 years' in a Senior position.
  • Strong knowledge of managing ground control management programs and geotechnical data collection.
  • Requires broad knowledge and experience from a number of technically challenging mines either as a consultant or a site-based role.
  • Sound understanding of the PNG Mine Safety Act and Regulations.
  • High-level knowledge of geotechnical slope stability monitoring and analysis software.
  • Knowledge of geological/mining modelling software eg Minesight, Vulcan
  • Knowledge of cost control and finance software such as SAP
  • High degree of competency in MS applications.
  • Sound planning, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in English with excellent verbal, written, communication and public speaking skills
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work under pressure and autonomously
  • Excellent attention to detail and time management skills to meet deadlines
