About your role

We are looking for a Geotechnical Superintendent Cave Management to join our diverse team at Oyu Tolgoi. The Superintendent Cave Management will be responsible for managing the day to day execution activities for the Oyu Tolgoi UG Caves, and providing mentoring and direction as a leader of the Shaft 1 Geotechnical Team to the mining team and operators

This role is a great opportunity to take the next step in your career, being part of one of the biggest underground project whilst working with a great team of people. Working a 5 Day On /2 Day Off residential or 4 Week On/2 Week Off - FIFO roster, and reporting to the Geotechnical Manager, you will be:

  • Managing and publishing daily, weekly and monthly draw control execution plans
  • Implementing best practise guidelines in draw calls and compliance reporting
  • Providing training and communication to operators in geotechnical and draw control awareness to the mining team
  • Collate and process data from all cave and surface subsidence monitoring systems to enable the interpretation of the cave back and muckpile progression as well as subsidence related deformations.
  • Collate and process data from all extraction level and undercut level monitoring systems to manage the stability, integrity and longevity of all drawpoints, extraction drives and undercut drives.
  • Collate and analyse all undercut and drawbell blasting information and undercut face position data to ensure blasting QC and overall compliance with plan, so as to minimise rock mass damage and stress related deformations, including the formation of 'pillars' on the undercut.
  • Collate and analyse all production draw data information to ensure draw compliance (both draw sequence and tonnage drawn) with plan so as to minimise dilution, maximise recovery and preserve the integrity of the extraction level (drawpoints and extraction drives).
  • Coordinate and execute all rehabilitation plans.
  • Manage the execution of the cave management and undercut management plans.
  • Manage all major hazards through tracking of TARPS defined in the cave management and undercut management plans
  • Provide training, development and mentoring to engineers, particularly in the area of draw control, geotechnical monitoring systems operation and maintenance, basic level of data analyses and interpretation.

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have the following:
  • Minimum 7 years in a supervisory UG Geotechnical role
  • Minimum 5 years in draw control and production in cave mines
  • Core underground geotechnical engineering experience
  • Experience in geotechnical monitoring system installation, data acquisition and data analysis
  • University graduate or post-graduate qualifications in Geotechnical Engineering or equivalent
  • A comprehensive understanding of draw control modelling systems and dispatch optimisation systems
  • Proficient use of standard Microsoft Office suite tools
  • Strong communication skills and leadership expertise

It will also be beneficial if you have:
  • Work and living experience in developing countries with strong cultural awareness
  • Block cave experience
  • PMP (Project Manager Practitioner) certification

Where you will be working

Oyu Tolgoi is an operating Copper / Gold open pit mine with a brownfields underground mining project. The site is located in the Gobi desert region of Mongolia. The reserves case for the underground project is in the order of 0.5 billion tonnes of ore to be mined from the 95,000 tonnes per day Hugo North Lift 1 (HNL1) panel cave mine with a 20 year operations life. There is also the potential for 3 further block cave districts to increase mine life beyond 100 years.
