Who we're looking for

Our Head Office in Melbourne is on the lookout for an innovative Data Science Lead passionate about the use of digital technologies and data science to drive operational efficiencies. This unique and rewarding opportunity will allow you to work across the business with exposure to the different mine sites at Newcrest and the Corporate office.

Reporting to the Principal Digital Platforms, you will collaborate closely with other areas of the business, including Digital Site Squad Leads, Digital Change Lead and our Digital Platforms team, as well as the broader IT & Platforms team to develop and manage strategies for increased adoption of data science and advanced analytics tools across sites and functions.

You will also play a key role in developing the cultural roadmap to deepen people skills and the organisation's capabilities to make the best use of its data to drive improvement.

Other key responsibilities of the role include:
  • Delivery of multiple data science and advanced analytics projects across operational sites and functions
  • Working with GMs, Managers, Superintendents and domain experts across the organization to deliver targeted and prioritised data science initiatives including generating a sustained pipeline of initiatives
  • Developing and managing strategic external partnerships with data science and advanced analytic service providers at the enterprise level
  • Being an advocate for and generating opportunity for the use at sites for Digital solutions including Mobile, Artificial Intelligence, Virtual/ Augmented Reality and Robotic process automation (RPA)
  • Assist in building the development programs for students and graduates


Ideally you would have studied in a relevant mining operational or IT discipline with a strong focus on data, statistics or mathematics field and have site-based experience. Your highly developed skills in understanding stakeholder needs and requirements and translating these into action plans will be used to positively influence how Newcrest understands, interacts and services its operational sites and functions in areas of cash generation, improved production and safety outcomes. As a trusted member of the team, you will also assist in developing programs for our Data Science Graduate and Vacation students and help coordinate their time on site.

In addition, you will also have:
  • Proven experience in delivering data science and digital solutions to Mining or Heavy industry
  • Experience with MATLAB, R or Python languages
  • Solution orientation, with a preparedness to "roll up your sleeves" and be part of a sustainable solution
  • Prior experience in the use of statistics to gain insights into complex problems, and use of digital technologies to improve productivity, deliver cash value and/or improved safety outcomes will be highly valued


Please note: This is residential role in Melbourne on a Fixed-Term Contract running through to August 2021. If you reside outside of Melbourne, there is an expectation that this role will entail travel to/from Melbourne on a regular basis or as is required. Also, there is an expectation that there will be visits to sites across the Newcrest group.
