Summary

The Mechanical and Piping Group is a Hatch Global Practice providing Mechanical design expertise to a wide variety of Hatch’s commodity-based business practices. Our capability spans the whole project life-cycle comprising; scoping, conceptual design, pre-feasibility, feasibility studies, detailed engineering, construction support and project management. The group supports several different fields, such as energy, mineral processing and infrastructure with the primary focus in the Sudbury office being mining and mineral processing.
Our Sudbury team is currently seeking a dedicated Mechanical Engineer to assist with project work in the office with opportunities for field assignments. The Mechanical Engineer is broadly responsible for establishing system requirements, performing functional analyses, defining design criteria, preparing engineering calculations, technical specifications, data sheets and reports. In addition to developing or providing input to 3D models and 2D drawings.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in defining project scope
• Assist the Engineering Manager/Lead Mechanical Engineer with the delivery of project requirements as they relate to scope, cost and schedule
• Perform system analyses, establish user requirements, analyze system functional and performance requirements, define design criteria, and establish system layouts and designs
• Prepare engineering calculations such as hydraulic modeling, stress analysis, equipment sizing and tank, pressure vessel and bin design and ensuring that all analyses satisfy user and system requirements
• Prepare technical specifications, contract documents and data sheets based on input received from other disciplines
• Conduct interface management between related systems
• Prepare and contribute to technical memos and reports, within areas of expertise
• Provide input to engineering, operating and capital cost estimates
• Prepare and/or review project standard specifications and design criteria
• Provide input to 3D models and 2D mechanical drawings
• Participate in and contribute to design reviews
• Carry out assigned tasks within budget and schedule
• Manage small capital and maintenance projects
• Assist in preparing proposals
• Review and evaluate technical work prepared by junior engineers, intermediate engineers, designers, technicians and technologists
• Assist in the compilation and delivery of monthly engineering status reports
• Construction supervision and management dependent upon project demands
• Assist in the commissioning of systems on site as required.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

• BSc/BEng in mechanical engineering.
• Registration as a professional engineer. Alternatively, registration as a candidate professional engineer actively working towards professional registration.
• Five to Ten years project engineering experience.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills including client engagement
• Working knowledge of industry standards, regulations and codes pertinent to the mechanical engineering discipline.
• Ability to function as a member of a multidisciplinary team and coordinate mechanical activities between disciplines.
• Ability to delegate tasks and effectively supervise others
• Ability to function with minimal supervision
• Willingness to travel occasionally to other Hatch offices and project sites.
• Experience in the use of procedures and workflows in the execution of projects

Preferred

• Familiarity with ASME piping and pressure vessel codes
• Familiarity with pumping calculations, simulations, Hydraulic Institute
• Familiarity with CEMA conveyor design standards
• Familiarity with SMACNA Industrial Duct construction standards, dust collection systems (ACGIH)
• Familiarity with process cooling systems including but not limited to cooling towers and chilled water systems (ASHRAE 15).
• Familiarity with NFPA fire protection systems and codes. Ontario Fire Code or relevant NFPA codes.
• Fuel systems design (natural gas, propane and fuel oil) and relevant code requirements.
