About this role

What will you be responsible for?
  • The Senior Engineer, Tailings & Water Management, works with the Director, Tailings & Water Management within the Technical Services Team based in Denver, Colorado. The role will provide professional leadership and expert tailings storage facility (TSF), dams and site-wide water management mentorship and operational support to our global mining operations.
  • The Senior Engineer, Tailings & Water Management, will serve as a company resource for geotechnical and water-related information and analysis, providing centralized technical services across our global portfolio. The position will work as part of our Corporate Tailings & Water Management Team to ensure that multi-functional constraints, goals, opportunities and risks are accounted for, and a full and transparent path forward is mapped for existing operations, legacy sites, stage-gate projects, and new mines.
  • The Senior Engineer, Tailings & Water Management, works with the operations to increase bench strength of our Responsible Tailings Facility Engineers/Persons (RTFEs/RTFPs) and other less experienced members of the team supporting tailings and water management.


In this role you will

Here is a snapshot of what your day to day will look like:
  • Support implementation and oversight of detailed third-party review processes, including Independent Technical Review Boards (ITRBs), Stewardship Programs, and periodic comprehensive safety reviews, including supporting sites in addressing identified recommendations. (25%)
  • Develop and implement tools/processes to provide improved management of our tailings facilities and other site dams, including ensuring that relevant company standards, guidelines and proposed model practices are applied to tailings management and water management. This includes active participation in risk assessments. (25%)
  • Act as a corporate liaison with engineering firms (e.g., Engineer of Record) providing technical review and mentorship for operations and major projects related to geotechnical, hydrological and hydrogeological data collection, analysis, design, construction and operational management, including corporate review of documentation to support the stage-gate process. (25%)
  • Provide mentorship to operating sites for critical planning of site waste and water management with a long-term view, including evaluation and implementation of improved technologies or innovative solutions. (15%)
  • Mentor, train and develop team members with regard to tailings and water management. (10%)

Your training, skills & experience checklist

Here is what we would need to see from you!
Knowledge:
  • Minimum - Bachelor's Degree in Civil/Geological Engineering, Geological Engineering or related Engineering field from an accredited curriculum with courses in Soil Mechanics.
  • Preferred - Master's Degree in Civil/Geotechnical, Geological Engineering or related Engineering subject area.
  • Knowledge in the principles and practices of civil, geological, geotechnical and hydrological engineering or a related field of science or engineering.

Experience:
  • Minimum 10 years of proven experience.
  • Consulting experience is preferred.
  • Experience in tailings and/or water dam design, construction, management, operation and closure.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated strong technical writing, group presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, with ability to communicate to a diversely-educated audience.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong communication networks with peers, RTFEs/RTFPs, project managers, mine manager, and JV partner representatives.
  • Overseas work experience in 1st, 2nd and 3rd world countries.
  • Experience in project evaluation from concept to ongoing operations and closure stages.
  • Well-networked into industry specialists and consultants.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge of appropriate software (e.g., MS Office, AutoCAD, SLIDE, SEEP/W, UTEXAS, FSCONSOL, GOLDSIM, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, FLAC, PLAXIS, MUCK3D) and geotechnical and hydrological data analysis.
  • Familiarity with business systems and standard office application software.
  • A high level of cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  • Work in a potentially stressful environment.
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety of yourself and others.


Working conditions and location

Where you will be located!
  • The position is located in the Denver corporate office.
  • Performance of the work requires travel (15-30% of work time) to domestic and international operations. Travel can be at a moment's notice to overseas or domestic locations, including Newmont and non-Newmont locations and greenfield sites.
