The Opportunity

We are currently seeking an Assistant Mines Technologist, Local 2020 for our Coleman Mine, Sudbury Operations.

Although previous experience in mining or an industrial setting is considered an asset, we also appreciate that diversity of thought comes from our differences – and that’s what makes us great!

Accountabilities:
  • Assists in surveying and ventilation duties as directed to support the short and long-term production planning requirements.
  • Performs surveying, performs cavity surveys, prepares incentive contracts, copies and distributes prints and safety notices.
  • Performs ventilation measurements and logs underground data for analysis.
  • Performs routine ground control duties such as geotechnical data gathering.
  • Performs calibration, minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Purchases supplies and office equipment.
  • The job requires self-direction.
  • Responsible to provide service to internal or external customers in a timely way according to the specific requests and stated expectations of the customer. The quality of the service is largely guided by government legislation and by Vale mine standards.
  • Frequent underground travel is required..

QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIFIC SKILLS:

10 Education: Minimum 2 Year Community College Diploma in an appropriate mining discipline or

Post-Secondary equivalent.

10 Experience: Minimum of two years of progressive mining experience.

10 Processes: General knowledge of surveying, ventilation, incentive, safety notification

and ground control principles.

5 Equipment: Use and maintenance of ventilation and survey equipment.

5 Computer: Proficiency with MineCAD, Excel and Word.

OTHER REQUIRED SKILLS:

Further information will be gained through the technical interview, possible testing and reference check regarding other required skills (including abilities and knowledge, reading and writing skills, equipment knowledge) needed for the role.

Equipment Knowledge - Required to use or have knowledge of basic equipment or hand tools (e.g. light vehicles, office equipment or basic laboratory equipment). Ability to use and understand ventilation and surveying equipment. Maintains and calibrates ventilation and surveying equipment so that it stays in full working order.

Technical Knowledge - Required to perform routine professional or technical tasks, procedures or calculations requiring basic training in one or more specialty areas pertaining to surveying and ventilation disciplines (e.g. uses standard software at a functional level).

Numerical Knowledge - Uses basic mathematical concepts, established formulae or standard procedures to calculate, prepare or interpret routine financial or statistical information, reports or tables—or designs or develops simple computer, logical or mathematical routines or reports pertaining to surveying and ventilation disciplines. Ability to use PC software such as spreadsheets, computer assisted drafting and word-processing.
