The Opportunity

We are currently seeking an Sr. Engineer, Ventilation to join our Ontario Operations Department in Sudbury.

The Sr. Engineer, Ventilation develops the ventilation designs within the Mine Designs that support the LOMP for each site of Vale’s North Atlantic Operations (Sudbury Ontario, Thompson Manitoba, Voisey’s Bay Newfoundland and Labrador).

The role holder will support integration of the long-range ventilation designs into the mid-range ventilation planning, support creation of the ventilation strategy including appropriate technology, complete required analysis to optimize the existing ventilation systems and create business cases to support the recommended strategy for the operations. The role will liaise with Ventilation Planning & Integration, Site Specialists, Mine Design Group, Mine Operations, Ground Control, Base Metals Projects and IT/Automation as required.

This role functions as the resource to efficiently design the long term mine ventilation system designs as assigned, lead ventilation projects and initiatives and support alignment of the 5 year to LOM ventilation strategy.

Although previous experience in mining or an industrial setting is considered an asset, we also appreciate that diversity of thought comes from our differences – and that’s what makes us great!

Education:
  • The ideal candidate will have an undergraduate degree in Mine or Mechanical Engineering.
  • P.Eng Certification is required.

Experience:
  • The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 8-10 years’ experience in Mining Engineering, ventilation design or related roles. Applicants with less experience will be considered provided they meet all other qualifications.

Requirements & Accountabilities:
  • Develop business cases, as assigned, that incorporate new technology and ventilation strategy into current and long-range ventilation designs including the impact on production/opex/capex.
  • Lead projects to optimize ventilation systems and projects to improve the workplace environment.
  • Create mine ventilation designs using numerical modeling tools while ensuring continued communication with the Mine Design Group and site Ventilation Specialists (Brownfield designs).
  • Integrate the ventilation portion of the Mine Design with the Ventilation Planning 4-24 month requirements.
  • Supports work on ventilation standards, guidelines, design basis.
  • Communicate with site Ventilation Specialists as to potential technology that is recommended to support the mid-range Ventilation Plan and execution of that plan.
  • Ensure good engineering principles are applied to designs and consider safety of employees within the design.
  • Support FEL studies, as required, with participation on drawing and document reviews.
  • Provide training to foster skills and competencies within the ventilation team and others as required.
  • Supports site Ventilation Specialists with mine ventilation models to ensure they are up-to-date and calibrated and assist mine sites with problem solving as required.
  • Communication of ventilation issues to varying audiences, including stakeholder groups to senior leadership.

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Underground mine design, ventilation, scheduling, and understanding of mining activities.
  • General knowledge of engineering planning software.
  • Knowledge of ventilation modeling software (VentSim, VNET, CLIMSIM, MineFire,) is recommended.
  • Strong communication skills and development of concise documents and presentation materials.
  • General knowledge of construction planning, experience with electrical design and infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of cash flow modeling techniques and economics is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and familiar with spreadsheet manipulation in Excel.
  • Be creative, not only use best and past practices but promote new ways of doing things in order to maximize the efficiency of ventilation systems to support economic mine designs.
