The Opportunity:

The Superintendent, Tailings will provide technical guidance and leadership to ensure the tailings and water management systems are managed, constructed, operated and maintained according to current recognized industry standards and best practices. This position will work with a team to achieve this goal; teamwork and collaboration will be expected amongst the Director of Health, Safety and Environment; the Environment Department staff; the Capital Projects Group; and various consultants and contractors, including the Engineer of Record.

This position is designated as the Responsible Person for the safe management of the tailings and water management facilities, as described in the Mining Association of Canada (MAC) Guide to the Management of Tailings Facilities. This position would be responsible to oversee multiple operating and closed facilities in Hudbay's Manitoba Business Unit, located in Flin Flon and Snow Lake, Manitoba.

The position is located in Flin Flon, Manitoba. Routine travel will be required to other Hudbay tailings and water management facilities in northern Manitoba, including Snow Lake, Manitoba.

Accountabilities:

• Act as the Responsible Person for Hudbay's tailings and water management facilities in Flin Flon and Snow Lake, Manitoba.

• Provide leadership and technical oversight to ensure operations conform with design intent.

• Provide direct supervision to the Tailings Operations Coordinator and Maintenance Coordinator.

• Apply Best Available/Applicable Practices (BAP) for design, construction, operations and closure stages.

• Oversee and maintain the dam safety program, including Operation, Maintenance and Surveillance (OMS) documents, Emergency Preparedness and Response Plans (EPRP).

• Plan, implement and maintain a site maintenance program.

• Review risk and implement risk management processes.

• Oversee operational procedures and plans for tailings deposition and water management.

• Oversee and perform routine inspections and monitoring, as well as reporting related to these activities.

• Develop and implement training programs for team members.

• Coordinate external review, including: Independent Peer Review Board (IPRB), Dam Safety Inspections (DSIs) and Dam Safety Reviews (DSRs).

• Maintain permits, monitor performance and report regulator compliance.

• Coordinate with engineering firms to provide technical review and recommendations, and review work scopes.

Requirements:

Experience and Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Civil/Mining/Geological Engineering or related engineering field from an accredited curriculum is required.

• Master's degree in Civil/Mining/Geological Engineering or related engineering field from an accredited curriculum is preferred.

• Professional Engineer accreditation (P.Eng.) or equivalent relevant accreditation. Candidate to be eligible for immediate registration in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

• A minimum of 10 years experience in tailings or water management facility design, construction, operation and closure.

• Class 5 Driver's License and familiarity with driving on active mine sites.

• Experience and knowledge in the principles and practices of civil, geological, geotechnical and hydrological engineering.

• Consulting experience is an asset.

Skills and Abilities:

• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing to a diverse audience.

• Ability to lead a team to achieve dam safety performance objectives.

• Experience developing and implementing tailings and water management facility policies, and authoring dam safety documentation.

• Familiar with applicable regulations as they relate to tailings and water retaining dams, and tailings disposal systems.

• Proficient with MS Office software, and familiar in related engineering software (AutoCAD/Civil 3D, ArcGIS, GoldSim, GeoStudio, etc.).

• Experience with cost estimating for earthworks projects, project scheduling and project controls is an asset.

• Experience collecting and interpreting geotechnical instrumentation.

• Experience in performing site investigations (i.e. drilling and test pits), laboratory testing, soil characterization and slope stability analyses.

• Familiar with surface water hydrology, design of water control structures, and groundwater hydrology is an asset.

• Experience in authoring, reviewing and editing geotechnical and hydrotechnical engineering reports.

• Act in a manner that ensures the health and safety of yourself and others. Identify and act to correct potential workplace hazards. Familiar with applicable workplace safety regulations.
