The Role
The purpose of this job is to operate the Loader, thus optimizing safe extraction of Materials at the Nyrstar Tennessee Mine operation. A loader is most commonly a rubber tired mining vehicle equipped with a forward mounted bucket used to extract ore, load, haul and dump. This is performed either in a haul truck or at a dump site.
Key Accountabilities

The purpose of this job is to operate the Loader, thus optimizing safe extraction of Materials at the Nyrstar Tennessee Mine operation. A loader is most commonly a rubber tired mining vehicle equipped with a forward mounted bucket used to extract ore, load, haul and dump. This is performed either in a haul truck or at a dump site.
Key Accountabilities
- Conducts pre-shift check of equipment
- Washes down surrounding area and wet material to suppress dust
- Scales down loose material
- Checks job site and identify and manages possible misfires in accordance with site procedures (if a Handler's license is obtained)
- Checks, identifies and removes contaminants
- Ensures all hoses and other auxiliary services are neatly stored
- Confirms type of material and hauls it to the designated location
- Identifies and manages spillages on hauling surface
- Maintains hauling efficiency by managing working environment conditions
- Slows equipment to crawl when approaching dump site lift bucket to appropriate height in readiness for dumping, maintaining stability of loader
- Dump material evenly distributing load or as required
- Cleans up job site
- Carries out operator maintenance
- Conducts housekeeping activities
- Promote and demonstrate safe behavior at all times
- Comply with the site's standards and procedures in SHEC as well as MSHA regulations
- Demonstrate effective performance in achieving agreed SHEC goals in support of the department, site and company standards
- Demonstrates leadership in SHEC through personal behaviors and conversations, and report all SHEC incidents and participate in SHEC initiatives, reviews and investigations
- Take responsibility for the safety of all personnel, including yourself, at Nyrstar Tennessee Mines
- Wears proper PPE at all times
- Understands basic loader operations
- Able to perform pre-shift checklist on loader, including lubrication as required and the ability to inspect the roadway for hazards to tires
- Demonstrate the ability to check ground conditions and correct deficiencies using proper scaling methods
- Demonstrate the ability to use a loader for: benching, mucking initial cuts, backstope and shrinkage mucking, mill hole (raise) cleanup, loading trucks, building ramps
- Management of oversize material
- Heading preparation for production drilling
- Attend work in an punctual manner, fit for work, and that correct procedures are followed in cases where absences from work may occur
- Maintain a sound relationship with Mine Shift Team Leader, coworkers, and other departments while working together
- 1-2 years experience in mining
- Experience in mine specific equipment and truck haulage operations
- Demonstrated competence in ground control
- Preferred knowledge of mining regulation and statutory responsibilities
- Demonstrated competence in coaching, mentoring and providing feedback to team members
- Good time management and prioritization skills
- Performs practical and manual activities
- Has an aptitude for mechanics and is able to handle machinery
- Is physically fit
- Is able to work as part of a team
- Is willing to work in remote areas under difficult conditions
- Has good organizational skills
- Is able to record details accurately
- Has a knowledge of underground mining principles
