Senior Environmental Geologist

Site: Fortescue Centre, East Perth

Roster: Monday to Friday

In order to address the management challenges of these projects, during operation and in preparation for mine closure, FMG has gathered a strong internal team of groundwater, surface water and engineering specialists. We have 12-month fixed term a role for a Senior Environmental Geologist to join the Perth based Long Term Planning team. Reporting to the Principal Mine Closure, the role is to manage waste rock material characterisation programs and develop mineral waste management strategies for operations and expansion sites.

Key accountabilities will include:

  • Manage the mineral waste geochemical testing program including sample section and collection via geological drilling teams, oversee laboratory testing and associated budget management.
  • Compile and manage the geochemical sampling database using acQuire and Tableau software.
  • Develop geochemical reports and management guidance to support environmental management / approvals and ongoing regulatory reporting.
  • Work with field and site teams to ensure geological logging and sampling meets the aims of geochemical testing programs and environmental management.
  • Maintain a collaborative relationship with other business units and external parties and build awareness of acid and metalliferous drainage management requirements within the business.

Qualifications and skills required:

  • Bachelor degree in geology, geochemistry, environmental engineering / science or related subject.
  • 5+ years' practical experience managing geological logging or geochemical sampling and evaluation programs. Knowledge of Pilbara geology or environmental geochemistry preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience using acQuire software. Experience with building and interpreting models (e.g. PHREEQC, Geochemists Workbench) would be beneficial.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management, and mine site health and safety.
  • Knowledge of Australian and Western Australian environmental legislative compliance and interpretation would be beneficial.
  • Strong team-building, communication and mentoring skills and willingness to spend moderate durations of time on site and in the field.
  • Ability to work in Australia
