Our Vale Base Metals Technology Excellence Centre – Mineral Processing Department is currently seeking:
Process Technologist (Student) CO-OP Position

Start Date: Jan 2021

End Date: Dec 2021

Location: Mississauga, ON
Full time hours: 37.5 hours per week
Hourly Pay: Depending on work terms and experience.

The Opportunity:

The Geometallurgical Technologist will be a substantial part of a small group within the mineral processing section at the Technical Excellence Centre in Sheridan Park. Although the position may support all facets of a process in which metallurgical and mineralogical data are collected on the world-class Sudbury orebodies, the key role is anticipated to be flotation testing.

This is a 12-month fixed term opportunity and there are two positions available.

Accountabilities:

The health and safety of yourself and of your coworkers are paramount; you are responsible for following all company procedures and protocols.
  • Collecting metallurgical and mineralogical data in support of Geometallurgical program
  • Performing froth flotation test work
  • Executing ore crushing and sample preparation where vital
  • Support for general sample receiving and preparation, including crushing, splitting, and inventorying.
  • Support for the collection of chemical assay, metallurgical and mineralogical data during work in the chemical assay labs, mineral separation labs, or mineralogy labs.
  • Grinding time determination, size analysis and sample preparation
  • Froth flotation testing to resolve grade/recovery curve from ores.
  • Weighing and fusing solid samples, use of acid dissolution techniques, dilution of aqueous samples prior to analysis, preparation of calibration standards and ongoing maintenance of ISO documentation.
  • Depending on the student's progress, there could also be opportunity to gain hands-on experience operating sophisticated and complex plasma based spectrometers, x-ray spectrometers, and mineralogical analysis systems.
  • The applicant should be able to do moderately-physical work including lifting up to 10kg, but ability to lift up to 20kg would be an asset
Education:
  • Current students enrolled in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year University students from an Engineering field. Preference for Mining, Geological, Minerals, Chemical or Material Engineering Programs.
Experience:
  • Previous experience with froth flotation test work would be an asset
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Microsoft Office and Excel, report writing skills, communication skills.
  • Moderate physical work including lifting are required
