About the role

We are looking for a Project geoscientist to join the RTX Team. This challenging role offers to discover or acquire resources that create significant value opportunities for Rio Tinto. The incumbent will advance projects with good potential across any stage of the project lifecycle to process as efficiently and rapidly as soon as possible.

The work schedule will be 3 weeks in, 9 days off.

Reporting to the Programme Manager, the Project Geoscientist:
  • Helps designs and execute exploration projects of small to medium size and/or leads discrete team within more complex project
  • Increased awareness regarding the effectiveness of the team and guidance of junior staff
  • Provides specialist technical services to projects and team across an exploration programme
  • Provides increased supervisory responsibility for the project team
  • Generation and/or evaluation of exploration targets with the potential to deliver to the Rio Tinto Group ore bodies capable of becoming large, low-cost, long life mines within the region
  • Ensure rapid and efficient advancement of exploration projects with appropriate potential for drill testing, further developing of promising projects and identifying and exiting failing projects quickly




About you

To succeed in this role, you will have:
  • A passionate desire to participate in discovery
  • Tertiary degree in geology or related field (with honors)
  • At least 5-7 years related field experience
  • High level of technical competence within a relevant discipline (eg. geology, geophysics, geochemistry) with demonstrated understanding of technical concepts and principles and their application in an exploration environment.
  • Broad knowledge of mineral deposits and exploration techniques across a variety of commodities
  • Cu-porphyry experience will an advantage
  • Understanding of drill techniques and related geological oversight
  • Geological mapping and core logging experience
  • Good analytical skills to collate, analyse and interpret technical data
  • Advanced computer skills, the standard office package and specialized software, in particular ArcGIS
  • Good understanding of project management skills
  • Developing leadership skills which enable the coaching technical/professional staff and manage contractors
  • Fluency in Russian, good proficiency in English and Kazakh

This position is based in Kazakhstan (Almaty) and is a permanent local contract.
