For nearly 90 years, Caterpillar Inc. has been making sustainable progress possible and driving positive change on every continent. Customers turn to Caterpillar to help them develop infrastructure, energy and natural resource assets. Caterpillar is the world's leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives. We don't just build great products, we pair them with the newest digital technologies and analytics to solve problems and anticipate customer needs. A lasting legacy of talented and committed employees give Caterpillar its competitive edge.

Caterpillar is seeking an experienced intellectual property/patent attorney to be based in Peoria, Illinois.

Caterpillar's intellectual property group offers a very broad-based intellectual property practice, including:

• Patent portfolio management, including invention harvesting and working with external counsel to have patent applications drafted and prosecuted;

• IP risk management, including management of conflict matters and post-grant procedures;

• IP enforcement against third parties;

• IP agreements counselling and support; and

• General IP counselling

The position will be primarily focused on identifying, evaluating, and acting on the potential enforcement of Caterpillar's intellectual property rights against third parties. The candidate will also be involved, over time, in portfolio management, obtaining appropriate patent protection for a supported business unit and/or technology, patent drafting and prosecution (primarily through working with outside counsel), patent clearance, providing client counseling and agreement support, and support for M&A activities.

The Caterpillar IP team has broad international exposure to IP matters and provides the opportunity to work closely with colleagues spread over the globe. The role will require a highly motivated individual that is looking for autonomy and flexibility, but also looking to be part of an enthusiastic team.

Candidates must have a relevant background (such as mechanical/electrical/physics) and be a qualified patent attorney. Whether your experience has been in-house or in private practice, you must demonstrate strong commercial judgement, excellent communication skills, and must also be prepared to undertake occasional business travel.

Qualifications:

• Requires a law degree, as well as considerable experience in the practice of U.S. law.

• Registered to practice before the United States Patent & Trademark Office.

• Must have demonstrated human relations and communications skills.

• 3-5 years years of experience, preferably with a large law firm having a solid patent fundamentals training program.

Caterpillar is not currently hiring foreign national applicants that require or will require sponsorship tied to a specific employer, such as H, L, TN, F, J, E, O; however, as a global company, Caterpillar offers many job opportunities outside of the U.S. which can be found through our employment website at www.caterpillar.com/careers.
