Redpath Mongolia LLC has an immediate opening for a Construction Superintendent to join their dynamic team at the Oyu Tolgoi Project in Mongolia.  The site is situated in Southern Mongolia in the heart of the Gobi Desert flatlands.
 
Closing: November 5, 2020

Location: Oyu Tolgoi

Rotation: 4 weeks on, 2 weeks off

*Due to the current Covid-19 travel restrictions, we are on a modified rotation.  The rotation is 140 days:  3 weeks quarantine on entry.  11 weeks of work (14 days on, 3 days off).  2 weeks of quarantine at home and 4 weeks time-off.

Shift Length: 12 hours

Compensation: Redpath offers a comprehensive wage and benefit package

Travel: Flights provided from point of hire to job site

Conditions of Employment:Successful completion of pre-employment medical and substance abuse test

Job Description
The Construction Superintendent is responsible to manage and decisively lead all aspects of the underground construction scopes, including environmental, health and safety initiatives, supervisor and employee development, project management, cost management and building a constructive and positive working relationship with peers.

Roles and Responsibilities

General:

  • Effectively manage and coach performance by directing and coordinating all activities of the underground construction department to achieve full potential:
    • Review of critical construction areas of infrastructure to maintain focus on priority areas;
    • Identify areas of efficiency with focus on increased work area utilization;
    • As a priority, teach, mentor and train national personnel in best practices for work being completed;
    • Redeploy assets to priority areas to ensure schedule compliance to attain sustainable production;
    • Enhance the team’s capacity to complete internal projects, important planning and scheduling work;
    • Ensure productivity goals are met daily;
    • Lead continuous improvement strategies;
    • Implement Lean principles for all aspects of the underground construction cycle;
    • Comply with all mine, provincial and national safety requirements.
  • Effectively communicate and listen within all levels of the mine to:
    • Ensure a concentrated effort from the underground team members;
    • Build strong working teams, both with the client and contractors;
    • Enhance employee ownership and value differences;
    • Clearly and consistently communicate corporate directive and expectations.
  • Manage and participate in monthly environmental, health and safety audit of safety process and standard operating procedures:
    • Regularly review safety and standard working procedures with mining personnel;
    • Conduct workplace inspections to ensure compliance with safety processes and standards;
    • Conduct job observations in the field to ensure safe working practices;
    • Provide advice and guidance to mining personnel on compliance issues;
    • Report non-compliance and ensure communications throughout the mine to not repeat event;
    • Ensure employees understand and follow policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance of Company local and corporate policies and procedures and regulatory requirements. 
    • Provide support training within the production department;
    • Hold accountability for non-compliance. 
    • Conduct semi-annual/ annual employee reviews.
  • Complete planning, administrative, budgeting and reporting functions:
    • Direct operational planning to meet targets and objectives;
    • Direct in developing and monitoring work schedules;
    • Prepare and submit reports on progress and status of mine.

Health, Safety & Environment:

  • Having the authority and responsibility to maintain a safe and efficient working environment.
  • Follow Company and Oyu Tolgoi’s site health and safety standards and report any unsafe acts or conditions.
  • Responsible to ensure the proper use and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Comply with Oyu Tolgoi’s Critical Risk Management (CRM) requirements.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Education/Qualifications:

  • Must have 20+ years of Underground specific construction and mining experience;
  • Show progression into leadership roles with management of development teams;
  • Experience in and leading Lean programs is an asset;
  • Block caving experience, specifically in block cave development, is seen as an asset;
  • A degree in Mining Engineering with a professional designation is seen as an asset.

Work Experience/Skills:

  • An in-depth understanding of underground construction development, planning, and rock mechanics;
  • An in-depth understanding of mine safety legislation and regulations particular to Mongolia;
  • An in-depth understanding of underground mining practices, policies, procedures and standards;
  • An in-depth understanding of, proven ability to manage, underground construction project management including budgeting, costing, scheduling, financial, evaluation and reporting;
  • An in-depth understanding of underground equipment and emerging technologies;
  • A sound understanding of human resource management and motivation practices and techniques;
  • A comprehensive understanding of mine-site operations;
  • Knowledge of computer programs including standard Microsoft Office programs;
  • Highly effective organizational skills;
  • Ability to communicate effectively in one-on-one and small group settings;
  • Good oral and written communication skills in English;
  • Very strong interpersonal skills in order to develop effective internal and external relationships;
  • Proven leadership skills including the ability to lead and motivate individuals and teams;
  • Proven supervisory and management skills;
  • Effective conflict resolution skills;
  • Ability to effectively and calmly work in a team setting;
  • Ability to work independently on complex tasks and non-routine matters.
