Reporting to the Senior Lead Environmental Science, the Lead, Aquatic Sciences (known at Teck as Lead, Environmental Science) is accountable for work on projects to assess and support the ongoing management and compliance of regional and local permits associated with our coal mining operations. The position requires specialized scientific knowledge, technical skills, and environmental project management experience.

To be successful in this role we are looking for someone with excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, who is able to coordinate the efforts of others to accomplish objectives. Someone who will thrive in a fast paced environment with minimal direction, but also works well collaborating with a team. You will have strong problem solving and decision-making abilities, and be able to work independently in remote locations, in inclement weather conditions.

Responsibilities :
  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Design, implement, and manage technically sophisticated biological and physicochemical monitoring programs, including the collection of chemical, physical, and biological data
  • Provide technical review of study designs and reporting associated with environmental programs
  • Understand linkages between environmental programs to align study designs and share data between study teams as appropriate
  • Coordinate with internal and external specialists to address highly complex environmental science issues such as selenium biokinetic modelling and toxicology studies, nickel toxicology, and environmental monitoring programs
  • Supervise field investigations, inspections, and audits
  • Oversee contractors to confirm work is being conducted safely and in accordance with the project scope and health and safety requirements
  • Analyze field and analytical data to draft technical reports and communications
  • Maintain large, complex, program budgets
  • Collaborate closely with partners through the Environmental Monitoring and Elk Valley Fish and Fish Habitat Committees


Qualifications :
  • Degree or diploma in Environmental Science, Toxicology, Chemistry, Biology, or related field
  • Minimum four years demonstrated ability in the field of environmental compliance or monitoring specific to mining
  • Experience with environmental data management software (GIS/EQuIS) and proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite®
  • Knowledge of relevant federal and provincial environmental and waste legislation, standards, and effective industry practices
