The Port Colborne Refinery was commissioned over 100 years ago near the shores of beautiful Lake Erie on the Niagara Peninsula. Raw materials from Vale’s Sudbury Operations are shipped to Port Colborne for processing through the three plants – Cobalt Refinery, Precious Metals Refinery and Nickel Packaging and Distribution Centre. Products include, electro-cobalt, precious metals concentrate, gold sand, and finished nickel products. Finished products are shipped from Port Colborne to destinations around the world.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking Process Operator to join our Port Colborne Refinery in Port Colborne, Ontario.

The successful candidate will be a vital part of the Port Colborne Refinery and its operation. A Process Operator may be assigned at one of three distinct operating plants on the site. This position operates and monitors process conditions to meet product quality specifications and will work with machinery and equipment as part of a larger operation that processes and packages cobalt, precious metals, and nickel. The successful candidate must have the necessary skills to safely perform process operations and participate productively in a team environment.

Education & Experience:

• The ideal candidate will possess, a college/technologist diploma or certification in Chemistry or Mechanical, however, experienced candidates having some post-secondary attendance, especially in technical discipline, may be considered.

• Experience:
  • The ideal candidate will possess experience as a process operator in an industrial setting.
  • Experience working in a chemical plant environment and safe handling of hazardous materials would be an asset.
  • Experience working with packaging equipment, forklifts, inventory, ISO programs, shipping and logistics would be an asset.

Although previous experience in mining or an industrial setting is considered an asset, we also appreciate that diversity of thought comes from our differences – and that’s what makes us great.

Requirements & Accountabilities:

• Operate and maintain plant equipment safely and efficiently
• Participate fully in the Vale Production System (VPS)
• Safe handling of hazardous materials
• Follow Company health, safety and environment policies and procedures and any applicable legislation and regulations
• Respond to emergency situations as required
• Report deviations from established procedures and provide required documentation of work performed
• The role will entail shift work
