Hatchis currently seeking a highly motivatedCommissioning Engineerto join the team in New York City.This is a project delivery position within the Smart Grid and Asset Management (SGAM) team at Hatch. This position is to be based out of Hatch’s New York City office. The selected candidate is expected to have a good understanding of electrical distribution systems (including underground, 50kV or less), having worked at an electric utility, electrified rail or port facility, or other larger infrastructure sector with significant electrical distribution equipment.Specific experience in electrical system (pre-)commissioning, outage coordination and/or operations optimization services to distribution system assets is beneficial. The candidate may also have experience in the development or implementation of maintenance programs, manuals, inventory management, asset health assessments, or other supportive electrical equipment asset management programs.Client relationships with electric utilities in the US northeast is a bonus.

Hatch is expanding activities in its electric utility Grid Modernization & Asset Management sector, which leads the deployment of asset management programs that advise utilities on how to improve financial and reliability performance through more data driven decision-making that optimizes performance. Hatch utilizes its experience in advanced analytical risk-based decision-making tools, business process improvement, and asset management program maturity assessments to prioritize investments that drive right-sized solutions for our client’s unique needs.

Team – The growing Smart Grid & Asset Management team provides two complementary offerings.The first is focused on the planning and deployment of grid modernization systems & infrastructure that support the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) through system dynamic performance, DER penetration modeling, infrastructure modernization, and leading-edge smart control systems such as ADMSs and VPPs. The second covers various offerings such as developing roadmaps for the deployment of advanced asset management systems using advanced analytics and other digital tools to optimize decision making allowing utilities to make more informed investment decisions. When combined the teams advise utilities on how to leverage emerging technologies in their capital and maintenance planning programs.

Position – The Commissioning Engineer will participate in delivering projects and some business development support activities. In the near term, the Commissioning Engineer will support the delivery of a significant electrical distribution system project, which will require regular travel to the project site (within the New York City area). Occasional efforts will be required to support the business development and marketing initiatives of the broader Power sector sales team.This position will be expected to perform some shift work, as individual project delivery requirements require.

Project Delivery Responsibilities may include:
  • Under the direction of intermediate and senior engineers, support the resolution of challenging problems pertaining to large (utility like) distribution systems.This could include site & process assessments, gap analyses, development of roadmaps for improvement, leading and/or supporting the implementation of roadmaps, resiliency planning, system vulnerability assessments and construction / commissioning support
  • Support the planning & delivery of asset integration systems for electric utilities with increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs), integrating data analytics and other optimization software platforms to improve the utilities’ customer relationship, and return on invested capital
  • Supporting all delivery activities in accordance with all applicable codes and standards, including all of Hatch’s policies and procedures, including Safety, Environmental, Quality Assurance, Quality Control, and progress and financial reporting
  • Work alongside, leverage capabilities, and support delivery of projects from other Hatch service offerings including those from Digital, Advisory, Technology, Infrastructure, and Mining


Business Development Support may include:
  • Conducting market research into electric utilities in the US northeast
  • Working with the marketing team to establish / update marketing & client facing materials, as applicable
  • Coordinating or supporting the creation of proposal documents for client, including development of work plans on how to solve technical challenges


Specialist Qualifications:
  • 3-6 years of experience in the design, pre-commissioning, commissioning, operations, or auditing of electrical distribution systems
  • Experience working with the asset management team for electric distribution system assets
  • Experience with system optimized planning & utilization, asset evaluation & selection, development, asset GIS tagging & tracking, maintenance planning, and ultimate disposal or renewal of distribution system assets
  • Familiar with the asset management standards ISO 55000, 55001, and 55002
  • Familiar with the application of data analytics to asset management techniques
  • Bachelor level Education in electrical engineering, or an electrical certified engineering technologist (CET)
  • Legally able to work in the US


Additional Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with the operations and/or commissioning of electrical rail distribution systems (AC and DC)
  • Experience with operational readiness, maintenance program readiness, or asset management readiness assessments or implementation of program improvements
  • Eligible to become a New York State Professional Engineer (PE)


Organizationally reporting to the head of the Smart Grid & Asset Management team, the position will regularly be directed by the Project Manager OR Business Development Account Manager, of the project OR sales opportunities the Analyst is supporting. The position requires a high level of interpersonal communication skills, demonstrated commitment to complete assignments (sometimes under tight deadline), and a self-starting independence. A valid driver’s license and passport are required. Occasional domestic and international travel to site locations and other Hatch offices is required.
