About this role

What will you be responsible for?

The Principal Mine Design and Planning Engineer —Underground will report to the Regional Director - and potentially others as required by the organizational matrix structure, including dual reporting to a Project or Study Director when assigned to a project.

The role is responsible for providing mining engineering and mine planning services to meet the business needs of the study/project pipeline and in support of existing operations at Newmont, in particular related to Long-term Planning work packages such as scenario planning and reserves and resources. The incumbent may also be required to lead and advise the activities of other specialists whether individuals, small teams or consultants.

The role performs sophisticated engineering duties to support mine sites and studies and projects for Newmont. It encompasses a range of engineering and technical activities, involving some or all of the steps from identifying substantial technical problems and opportunities; through devising engineering approaches, processes and plans to resolve them; to researching, rationalizing, acquiring and assembling the resources to implement the plans.

We are looking for a candidate that can contribute to the development and implementation of the best engineering practices, standards, and guidelines, for application to operations and studies.

The position will support the site Long term planning teams in delivering long term mine planning work packages, including long term mining aspects of business planning, Reserves and Resources reporting, and support of site based studies, projects, Full Potential and Strategic Resource Development (SRD) activities.

Your role will consist of

Here is a snapshot of what your day to day will look like:
  • We provide visible and felt leadership in support of health, safety, security and S&ER programs including maintaining a high focus on safety within the Engineering Design and Long-term Planning Function and actively promoting Newmont's safety standards during all site visits.
  • Support Mine Engineering efforts on studies through the development pipeline from conceptual studies through to definitive feasibility mining projects.
  • Undertake site visits and targeted observations in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of relevant issues. Conduct risk and opportunity reviews.
  • We provide support for Reserves and Resource planning and annual reporting as per Newmont's standards and guidelines for working with the SEC.
  • We actively support Long-term Planning and SRD [JP1] in developing strategic options for scenario planning purposes; additionally support collaboration between Long-term Planning and site engineering resources in developing the final annual Business Plans.
  • Support Long Term facilities design and planning, Life of Asset infrastructure and reclamation and closure planning.
  • We ensure mine planning and economic evaluation of underground mining and in particular long-term planning at Newmont maximizes the value of the business, and look for opportunities to replicate standard methodologies across sites and studies, including consideration of safety in design.
  • We are responsible for ensuring that Continuous Improvement and Innovation are applied in the Engineering Design and Long-term Planning function.
  • Work with global Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and the SRD group to adopt and test new Long Term Planning processes and tools to improve strategic and long term planning delivery.
  • Provide expert advice and research skills to mine engineers at operations, including sophisticated instruction on the application of mine-engineering related software and tools. Champion the adoption of improved methods and tools at sites to support long-term planning teams.
  • Provide mining engineering skills and experience when called upon to support Full Potential and M&A Project Evaluation.
  • We provide a development and mentoring role to mining engineers based at operations.

Your training, skills, and experience checklist

Here is what we would need to see from you!
  • Tertiary Qualification in Mining Engineering, sophisticated degree in Mine Engineering a plus.
  • Considerable experience in mine planning, optimization, operations and strategic planning in large and diversified mine sites, with preference for experience in conventional hard rock Gold / Copper-Gold operations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to influence and impact in a dynamic, multitasking environment with competing priorities and high level of cultural awareness and sensitivity. Must be able to work in a collaborative environment and share standard methodologies across Newmont.
  • Critical work values include flexibility and adaptability, collaboration with others and the ability to plan and deliver work results with quality, accuracy, punctuality and reliability
  • Ability to build and maintain a strong communications network with Planning peers, Technical Services Managers, Project/Study Directors, Mine Managers, and JV partners
  • Experience in operations with sophisticated multi mine, multi process situations preferable and highly talented knowledge of mine methods, mine design, production scheduling (strategic and tactical), equipment selection, reserve estimation, maintenance and specialist systems.
  • High level of competence in the use of mine planning software, including optimal techniques and cash flow analysis and extensive experience with mine design and scheduling packages from Deswik, Geovia Whittle, MineSight, or Maptek;
  • Detailed knowledge of unit costing for resource and reserve analysis and experienced in financial analysis and models. Experience with Xeras cost estimating a plus.
  • Knowledge of exploration methods and resource estimation.
  • Strong problem solving and 3D visualization skills.
  • Relevant certificates of competency - certification as Professional Engineer, and/or Qualified-Competent Person status.


Working conditions and location

Where you will be located!
  • The position is based in a corporate administrative and technical office in Denver. Performance of the work requires travel (30-50% of work time) to domestic and international operations. Travel can be at short notice to overseas or domestic locations, including Newmont and non-Newmont locations and Greenfields areas.
  • Will be required to access mining and processing areas, rough terrain, or exploration sites.
  • Frequent working at a computer/monitor or keyboard.
  • Hear sufficiently to distinguish various pitches of warning alarms.
  • Must be sensitive to cultural differences at the operations within the Company
