Reporting to the Mine Superintendent, the Mine Operations Crew Lead is responsible for safe execution of mining operations and efficient production of ore and waste rock during each shift. Individual capability at this level is characterized as "directing planned work". The Crew Lead is proficient at: Planning, Allocating, Leading, Advising, and Communicating. The Crew Lead coordinates work requirements between departments and adjusts resources as required to ensure mining operations and not degraded. Multitasking is an essential function of the Crew Lead, they often manage multiple project / issue at once.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Health and Safety

•Knows responsibilities related to WMMI's Emergency Response Plan (ERP)

•Learns and administers all company and legislated policies and procedures

•Ensures the crew follows company and legislated safety rules and procedures

•Contributes to the department's health and safety goals and objectives

•Conducts pre-shift and monthly safety meetings

•Responds to safety concerns/unsafe conditions and takes corrective action, or seeks assistance in doing so

•Performs workplace inspections, hazard assessments, and accident / incident investigations

•Ensures employees use appropriate safety equipment

•Completes documentation, reporting, and follow up requirements

2. Environment

•Knows responsibilities related to the Environmental Management System (EMS)

•Contributes to the department's environmental goals and objectives

•Ensures the crew follows company and legislated environmental rules and procedures

•Fosters awareness of environmental issues among employees

•Ensures crew activities prevent or mitigate the effects of pollution

•Responds to environmental concerns and takes corrective action, or seeks assistance in doing so

•Completes documentation, reporting, and follow up requirements

•Follows company standards and guidelines for spill reporting and response

3. Production

•Executes the mine plan for each shift in a safe and efficient manner

•Exercises overall control of shift activities delegating responsibilities to the crew

•Ensures production targets are achieved by utilizing the Production Management Tools

•Analyzes operational procedures and makes changes for optimum production

•Employs personnel and equipment to maximize effectiveness

•Applies operating standards

•Completes shift production reports

•Manages and utilizes the Wenco system and ensures operators use the system properly

•Production Management Tool Usage:

•Completing Daily Shift Plan to deliver the best possible tonnage given the availability of all resources at shift start. Pass to Mine Superintendent before the start of shift.

•Completing the Daily Plan Summary with comments/assumptions regarding the plan as necessary. Pass to Mine Superintendent before start of shift.

•Allocate targets on the Line Out sheet and communicate these targets to the crew at start of each shift.

•Monitoring closely throughout the shift progress against the plan using the Check Sheets as a guide, along with Wenco information, and take any action necessary.

•Identifying Variances as they occur and take the necessary action, noting all problems on the Variance sheet ready to review later with the Mine Superintendent.

•Complete the Shift Shovel/Loader report and Truck Report by entering the actual numbers of loads loaded and carried. This information will be available from Wenco.

•Complete the Shift Shovel/Loader report and Truck Report by entering the actual lost time during the shift. This information will be available from Wenco.

•Review the reports with the Mine Superintendent at the agreed time.

4. Cost Control

•Demonstrates an awareness of costs and directs activities in a cost effective manner

5. Communication

•Clearly defines responsibilities and performance expectations and sets guidelines for execution without actively completing the work

•Maintains effective information exchange with Foreman, Mine Production and Supervisors in related departments

•Ensures complete crossover information for the oncoming supervisor

6. Training and Development

•Continuously assesses operator training needs

•Ensures employees have appropriate and adequate equipment training

•Makes employees available for training as required

•Completes records and reporting requirements

7. Human Resource Management and Employee Relations

•Evaluates and keeps accurate records of individual employee performance

•Provides timely and consistent informal and formal constructive feedback on performance

•Recommends progressive discipline

•Conducts probationary and annual employee performance reviews

•Completes records, reporting and follow up requirements

8. Administration

•Schedules shift personnel

•Manages employee attendance and overtime

•Schedules and manages employee vacation

•Manages employee time cards

•Keeps accurate records related to shift activities and personnel

9. Continuous Improvement

•Identifies and recommends opportunities for improvement in the department's performance

•Implements approved changes

•Participates in department goals setting program and achieves goals

Knowledge, Skill and Experience:

Education / Certification: High School Diploma or equivalent

Minimum Experience: Minimum 2 years of varied operations experience within an open pit mining environment

Skills: Demonstrated ability to organize, direct and supervise work; solid written, verbal and group presentation skills; experience with MS office software and functional keyboard skills
