Located approximately 26 miles from the City of Fairbanks, Fort Knox is a centre of excellence for the Company as one of the few cold weather heap leach facilities in the world. In 2016, the site poured its seven millionth ounce of gold, 20 years into its mine life. The initial Gilmore Expansion Project is expected to extend mine life to 2030.

Job Description

Responsible for safe and efficient operation of sampling equipment, vehicles, loaders, and forklifts. Ability to complete routine sampling, inspections, and opacity readings with minimal supervision. Familiarity with site permits, plans, and pertinent regulations along with EPA guidance. Responsible for completing work in accordance with the FGMI procedures, pertinent regulations, and EPA guidance documents. Communication, training, and interaction with other departments to assist with environmental compliance is an essential part of the technicians' responsibilities.

Job Responsibilities

  • Inspect landfill and hazardous waste storage area, inspect mill and maintenance areas, water storage reservoir and tailing impoundment, and monitor wildlife and habitat on the mine site for compliance. Report to corresponding department of any deficiencies.
  • Collect quarterly surface and groundwater samples.
  • Conduct and record monthly opacity readings.
  • Complete various internal and external reports.
  • Provide staff assistance to operation and maintenance personnel.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance is required.
  • Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management.
  • Compliance with all company policies and procedures, including, but not limited to, safety, confidentiality, and environmental policies.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the state.
  • Work safely in all areas, identify potential safety hazards, and work with management to correct hazards.
  • Work without significant risk of harm to self and others.
  • Perform other duties as required.


Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Employee must have sufficient education to read and write instructions, perform simple mathematical calculations, and keep records.
  • One year experience in environmental profession preferred.
  • Possess a working knowledge of basic compliance procedures as relates to site permits.
  • Must have or gain an understanding of sampling procedures, safety rules, company policies, emergency procedures, MSHA requirements, environmental regulations and guidance documents.
  • Must maintain required certification for opacity readings.
  • Must have solid computer skills including word processing and spreadsheet programs.
  • Must have solid verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets.
  • Must be available for shift work, overtime, holidays, and weekends.
