Reporting to the Director, Permitting and Closure, the Manager, Regulatory Approvals is responsible for supporting efforts to acquire social, environmental and regulatory approvals (SERA) by identifying internal and external best practices and disseminating that knowledge throughout the company through development of guidance material and working closely with project teams.

The successful candidate will be expected to facilitate continual improvements in Teck’s overall SERA processes, and identify challenges in active permitting efforts and work with the respective team to solve those challenges with the least practical impact to overall project development expectations.

Responsibilities:
  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Identify best practices, both internal and external related to SERA processes and disseminate knowledge throughout the company through development of guidance material and hands-on support.
  • Work with and lead project teams to develop SERA plans, assist in plan execution, and assist in the identification of subject matter expert support.
  • Participate on SERA Advisory Groups to provide direction to SERA teams and feedback to Project Boards.
  • Maintain close interaction with Business Unit/Project leads to keep SERA schedules current and accurately reported.
  • Maintain strong relationship with BU SERA leads and assist these individuals in meeting their objectives.
  • Assist project leads to conduct a thorough post permitting analysis to identify new best practices and opportunities for improvement.
  • Contribute review commentary as required to assist work packages through conceptualization, execution and submission.
  • Represent the company in negotiations with government and regulatory officials as required


Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in an Environment-related field of study.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive professional experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with large and small permitting processes, and with regulatory engagement in a mining context.
  • Demonstrated experience with tailings, waste rock and water management practices, closure planning, project management, and risk assessment and management.
  • Working understanding of mining, processing and refining fundamentals.
  • Working understanding of the effects of mining on the environment and practical knowledge of the methods of mitigation.
  • Operational experience within more than one product areas an asset.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements in Teck’s key jurisdictions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with people at all levels of the organization, an ability to influence outcomes, and an ability to manage conflict.
  • Advanced written, verbal and interpersonal communications and presentation skills.
  • Stong leadership and management skills including resource planning coordination and talent development.
  • A strategic thinker who is capable of seeing the big picture, identifying appropriate strategies and translating them into action.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems with logical and appropriate solutions in a timely and decisive manner.
  • Motivated self-starter who can manage several projects simultaneously and adapt to changing situations.
  • Uses best practices in indigenous consultation and community engagement.
  • Possess a high level of analytical and quantitative skills including risk management, project economics and evaluation and business analysis.
  • Strong demonstrable computer skills, in particular with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Fluency in Spanish an asset.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed.
