HSE Director role is responsible for monitoring and coordinating local implementation of company policies, programs, and initiatives related to Safety systems; including management or performance of the work necessary to ensure adherence to safety regulations, completion of safety training, and attainment of business values and objectives. Co-develop and lead implementation of Safety Management system on-site.

The primary responsibilities for the role are but not limited to:

  • Espouse the values of Nordgold – RESPECT, SAFETY, EFFICIENCY and COLLABORATION
  • Coach, mentor and develop Safety team in international Safety Best Practices and methodologies
  • Assist management in developing a road map for an improved safety culture
  • Participate in developing, maintaining and monitoring the implementation of Safety policies, underlying procedures and Safety Management system. Regular audit and tracking required
  • Ensure effective implementation of Safety program and related activities in line with governmental and corporate compliance requirements
  • Prepare annual Safety budget
  • Participate in the planning process of Safety resources to cover all operational areas
  • Plan and participate as investigation committee member site level accidents, injuries and determine the causes and preventative measures
  • Routinely monitor the workforce for unsafe behaviors and coach employees on the correct behaviors when observed
  • Perform surveys, audits, and gap assessments and recommend corrective actions for continuous improvement to ensure safe and healthy working conditions throughout the plant
  • Develop personnel – assess skills, determine needs and develop training programs for areas of responsibility. Assist other departments in identifying safety related training and overall site safety training and awareness
  • Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring and work direction and evaluate performance of the team
  • Provide leadership and updates on safety audits, observations and near misses with follow up on all open action items
  • Maintain a close coordination with departments to create strategies for the implementation of projects related to health and safety
  • Compile, analyze and interpret accident statistical data; recommend process and product safety features that will reduce employee exposure to chemical, physical, and biological work hazards

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Safety, Safety Management, Engineering or related technical field Content
  • Have an elevated sense of respect for safety procedures and regulations
  • Be able to embrace new techniques and technologies
  • Be able to work under pressure
  • Have a good work ethic and be goal oriented
  • Have a sense of adventure and be able to spend extended periods of time away from home
  • Discretion and respect for confidentiality and privacy are essential
  • A total team player, results driven and prepared to contribute to the wider Bissa objectives in an energetic and proactive manner.
  • Demonstrate continuous improvement culture
  • Computer literate (MS Office)
  • Good proficiency in English, French will be beneficial
  • Cross-Cultural Communication skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in Safety of which at least 8 years in mining, 4 years at managerial roles
  • Significant experience in implementation in Safety Management Systems
  • Advanced Risk analysis and critical control monitoring will be highly regarded
