Expression of Interest - Chief People Officer 

With the improving outlook for the mining sector, SFTP Mining ML SA (SFTP) has an exciting opportunity for an exceptional Chief People Officer to join our contract mining team. SFTP operates contract mining projects in Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal and Cote D’Ivoire. The Chief People Officer will ensure that SFTP has the resources, systems, culture and support in place to drive an ambitious expansion plan while ensuring our individual team members thrive and return home safely each day. The CPO is responsible for both the HSE & HR function of the organisation.

We are after a highly motivated leader, a role model, a person who is happy to roll up their sleeves to drive change management, and to build a diverse and successful team. They need to be collaborative and motivated there is much to be achieved.  We are after an employee champion, so this means working in the field as well as in the head office.

SFTP is looking to implement a strong program of Succession planning and improved diversity and the CPO will design lead and champion this program throughout the organisation. A KPI program is to be rolled through the organisation as a priority. The CPO will lead the team responsible for safeguarding the health and welfare of our employees. They must have experience working in West Africa and be Fluent in French and English. They should hold both HR and HSE Qualifications. They must have a deep understanding and experience of West African employment law and associated best HR & HSE practices for the region.

The CPO Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Leadership and day to day management of the P&C & HSE Teams
  • Trusted advisor and support to the CEO and executive leadership team
  • Drive change management within the organisation
  • Strategic Planning and Implementation of P&C & HSE plans
  • Drive HSEQ practices and imbed a safety culture
  • Provide management, guidance, coaching and act as a technical reference and support to the teams
  • Develop agreed procedures, safeguards and HSE controls and ensure they are applied and used.
  • Ensure all activities are conducted safely and in accordance with the industry’s country standards (or Australian if deficient) and SFTP Mining procedures.
  • Develop impactful monthly reporting capability for HR & HSE to drive decision making
  • Oversee Employee relations
  • Prepare budget’s and ensure the activities within budget.
  • Provide technical and Professional Advice for legal proceedings related to P&C & HSE
  • Overview the staff requirements ensuring they are in line with operational needs, strategic plans and budgets.
  • Establish a key performance indicator program for the group, monitor ongoing performance, and improve performance against set goals.
  • Formulation of Labour rates and simulations for bid purposes
  • Set up the working methodology for succession planning analysis, implementation and monitoring
  • Focus on diversity and inclusion with increased female and national participation in the workforce
  • Training & talent development
  • Design standardised salary tiers to achieve company-wide consistency in salary and bonuses
  • Conduct formal career development discussions with the teams and identify development opportunities and programs that assist with defining future career progression possibilities.
  • Recruitment & Selection management
  • Ensure compliance with local labor laws and standards Employee Relations Management, Improve employee engagement & retention
  • Human Resources Management Information Systems - Review and assess the HR module of the current ERP system
  • Lead communications and support services for the group
  • Review and update the organigram for the group, Implementation of Job descriptions through the organisation
  • Support SFTP Mining’s operations related goals and objectives.
  • Keep statutory and internal reporting as required.
  • Undertake other duties as reasonably directed by the MD from time to time, including project work

Key Skills​​

  • Excellent knowledge of West African Labour Laws

  • Aptitude in decision-making and problem-solving
  • Fluency in French and English (the ability to efficiently communicate in both) - French language skills will be required as the incumbent will need to manage diverse multi-cultural teams.
  • Sound knowledge of the mining, and mining contracting sectors
  • Working experience in Africa

Qualifications:

  • A tertiary or post graduate qualification(s) in HR or HSE ideally with previous experience in a similar strategic people and culture role
  • Experience in developing, implementing and managing a P&C & HSE Management System
  • Significant experience in contract mining operations Experience in issues management and risk mitigation Proven experience in leading a team of P&C  & HSE practitioners Minimum of 10 years’ experience in mining operations or contract mining. Minimum 10 years should at a management level.
