Description of Company

Barr is a consulting company that integrates engineering and environmental expertise to help clients develop, manage, process, and restore natural resources across North America and around the world. We have been employee owned since 1966 and trace our origins to the early 1900s. Today, we have more than 900 employees across the U.S and Canada who work with clients in the mining, power, fuels, public, and manufacturing sectors, as well as attorneys, developers, and others with complex challenges.

Why Choose Barr?

If you are looking for an employee-owned company that fosters a collaborative environment, focuses on providing exceptional client service, offers the opportunity to work on challenging projects, and makes employee safety a top priority, Barr is the place for you. In addition to a highly competitive benefits package, we offer mentor and coaching programs to help our employees develop and grow their careers, along with opportunities for volunteering and community involvement.

Summary

The person in this position will lead Barr’s growing geochemical practice across our growing geographical presence throughout the midwestern and western US, and in western Canada. This position can be located in one of our current locations or remotely. We are looking for a collaborative consultant and experienced geochemist to provide both technical and project leadership for our geochemistry team.

This position includes work on a range of projects involving tailings and mine waste, coal combustion residuals (CCR), legacy contamination, and other multi-media environments. The person in this position will use expertise in development and implementation of material and waste characterization methods and geochemical models to assess acid rock drainage/metal leaching, mineral solubility, water and chemical balances, and water quality.

Technical responsibilities will include leading geochemical assessments, designing and managing complex data collection programs, providing senior-level review of discipline-based work packages, and preparing technical reports and supporting documentation. Project responsibilities will comprise the development, management, and administration of discipline-based scopes of work, schedules, and budgets. Other typical activities include participating in technical conferences and seminars, mentoring and developing staff, communicating with clients, and participating in meetings and negotiations with clients and regulatory agency personnel. This person will advance the state of our geochemical practice group through knowledge sharing, creative problem solving, and service development.

The person in this position also will be responsible for client service and business development. Typical business development activities include building and maintaining client relationships, contributing to marketing campaigns and performing client outreach, fostering project opportunities, contributing to proposals and presentations, networking, and sharing Barr’s capabilities with existing and potential clients.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 10 or more years of practical experience in the geochemistry field
  • Specific knowledge of low-temperature systems, environmental geochemistry, and the weathering zone (chemical reactions, phase diagrams, mineral solubility)
  • Specific experience with building and interpreting thermodynamic equilibrium geochemical models (e.g., PHREEQC, WATEQF, MIN3P, Geochemist’s Workbench) and integrating these models with hydrogeologic, reactive transport, and mass balance models for predictive scenarios (e.g., GoldSim, MODFLOW)
  • Experience with mineralogical characterization methods, instrumentation, analysis, and interpretation and knowledge of field and laboratory programs to characterize potential for acid rock drainage and metal leaching, including application of geochemical testing methods for prediction of water chemistry
  • Extensive experience communicating technical results and uncertainties to diverse project stakeholders
  • Familiarity with mineral exploration methods, mine waste disposal methods, mineral processing methods, and mine and environment regulations and policies
  • General understanding of statistical methods
  • Demonstrated project management and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated expertise through technical publications and presentations
  • Demonstrated business development acumen and client relationship development skills

  • PhD in geochemistry or related discipline
  • 15 or more years of practical experience working on geochemistry projects
  • 5 or more years of consulting experience
  • Experience in geostatistical analysis, block modeling, and economic geology
  • Experience relevant to the subject matter of mineral project and NI43-101 technical reports
  • Knowledge and specific experience working on diverse mineral deposit types including copper/nickel, gold/silver, other precious metals, lead/zinc, steelmaking coal, and evaporites
  • Knowledge and specific experience in mine pit lake studies
  • PG/PE licensure or ability to obtain licensure within one year
  • Qualified Person designation and/or at least 5 years of experience in mineral exploration, mine development or operation, or mineral project assessment
