The person in this position will work with multidisciplinary project teams providing geotechnical engineering support for infrastructure, landslide and rockfall investigations and remediation, transportation, flood diversion, energy, and research projects. This person will work primarily with the mining industry, specifically oil sands and potash clients. Work will include understanding client needs and risks; learning how to contract investigation subcontractors; collecting geotechnical field data through in-situ testing or using the observational method; overseeing field investigations; performing instrumentation installation and monitoring; conducting laboratory studies, creating boring logs, and performing geotechnical computer modelling. Tasks may also include performing common geotechnical analyses such as slope stability, seepage, evaluation of bearing capacity, settlement, and deep foundations as well as preparing plans and specifications, writing reports, and estimating project costs. Fieldwork for the position will be comprised of activities involving construction observation and assistance with the management of project scope, schedule, and budget. The position will require working with geotechnical engineers in other Barr offices as well as our clients.

This position will require frequent out-of-town work assignments in Canada and the U.S.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An engineering degree with a geotechnical engineering emphasis from an accredited institution
  • 0-3 years of relevant work experience with traditional geotechnical engineering
  • Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to modify personal schedule as required to meet project deadlines and client needs
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Legal authorization to work in Canada and the United States without the need for sponsorship OR must be eligible to obtain a TN work permit
  • Acceptable driving record
  • Ability to lift and carry 22.7 kg

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in geotechnical engineering
  • Strong technical skills in a wide range of geotechnical analysis and design
  • Experience in the oil sands or potash industries in Canada
  • Work experience with geotechnical analysis and computer modelling or other related software (e.g., FLAC, Plaxis, Geo-Studio, Soil Vision, Slide, LPile, APile)
  • Field experience with cone-penetration testing, standard penetration testing, and other in-situ methods
  • Laboratory experience including strength and compressibility testing of clay and silt-size materials using triaxial or ring-shear test apparatus
  • Experience with the design, installation, and operation of geotechnical monitoring instrumentation systems, including remote monitoring and communications equipment

NOTE: Applicants must be able to work in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and to enter and work within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Safety training will be provided before being expected to work on these sites.
