Job Description

The Supervisor, Assay Lab primary responsibility is to optimize the operational aspects of the Assay Laboratory. The Senior Assayer oversees and coordinates all laboratory functions and is responsible for the accurate qualitative and quantitative analyses and reporting of samples.


  • Directs the processing and testing of ore samples and analyzes results to determine grade, value and mineral properties.
  • Develops appropriate industry standard assay procedures and instructional references for assay staff.
  • Prepares mineral/ore sample tests using spectrographic analysis, chemical solutions and chemical or laboratory equipment.
  • Prepares and processes ore samples for fire assay tests using flux materials, crucibles, cupels and placement into assay furnaces.
  • Weighs residues on balance scale to determine proportion of pure gold.
  • Manage QA/QC, review and validate data before released.
  • Ensure the lab is meeting the turnaround times to ensure the mill is running smoothly through effective communication with metallurgists, geologists and lab staff.
  • Performs operation and maintenance of key analytical equipment such as Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, fusion furnaces, microbalance, XRF, related lab equipment and sample preparation equipment.
  • Provides a platform for strong leadership and workforce empowerment by training and developing Assay Lab employees in all aspects of the lab functions and duties.
  • Ensures weekly production targets are met and makes recommendations for improvement when necessary.
  • Collects, enters and prepares assay data reports for mill operations and management review.
  • Research and implement new technology as available to increase effectiveness and efficiency of assay operations.
  • Ensuring that all employees work safely and in accordance with applicable legislation, company policy, standards, and procedures.
  • Report hazards & incidents in a timely manner in accordance with SGO's Health and Safety protocols.
  • Maintain and control Assay Laboratory inventory and place orders as required to ensure continuous operations.
  • Other duties as required

Required Skills

  • Strong expertise/knowledge of mineral processing and extraction.
  • Familiar with pulp and carbon fire assay techniques for gold extraction from sample drying, crushing, pulverizing, splitting, weighing, fluxing, fire assaying, cupellation, removal of slag, acid digestion and bullion techniques.
  • Excellent communication and problem solving skills.
  • Effective organizational, time management and analytical skills.
  • Strong computer skills to include data processing and data base management.
  • Strong working knowledge of Canadian Federal and Provincial mining & safety legislation and regulations.
  • Able and willing to work at a remote camp location on a 2 week rotation schedule.
  • The ability to pass pre-employment medical screening.
  • The ability to work in areas of extreme weather conditions.
  • The ability to work in close quarters with the team.

Required Experience

Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, or a Chemical Assaying diploma.

A minimum of seven (7) years' experience in a gold mine assay lab combined with three (3) years of direct supervisory responsibility.
