Job Overview

Plan, organize, coordinate and lead the Company's Electronical Engineering department activities. Support the Company's inter-departmental development of electrical and mechanical trucks. Participate in the on-going improvement of current model mining trucks. Resolve serious product problems (Juhins) within the target period. Participate in cost reduction programs in accordance with annual targets and implement on-going product improvements. Tasks include:
  • Develop Electrical project plans utilizing Komatsu Quality Control Procedure, and KES. Determine root causes and develop countermeasures within Quality, Cost and Delivery schedules.
  • Assist in establishing achievable project schedules. Identify man-power and material requirements and work within budgetary limitations.
  • Prepare project evaluation material for the various steps in the Komatsu Development procedure.
  • Make professional and convincing technical presentations to KAC and Kltd senior management in order to demonstrate and convince them that technical objectives are met, problems are resolved, or other action must be taken.
  • Accountable for meeting the electrical project schedules, in support of overall projects, as well as durability, reliability, weight and cost targets.
  • Participate in mining Customer Surveys and Competitive Evaluations. Understand Komatsu and competitive product features. Travel, including international, is required.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Instill a sense of ownership in subordinates and motivate them to meet their schedules and technical objectives. Supervise and provide technical guidance to engineers up to the level of Senior Engineer.
  • Coach and develop subordinate engineers, conduct formal annual performance reviews and provide frequent performance feedback. Prepare the departmental Merit Plan for subordinates and work with Managers in development of the overall Merit Plan. Identify high potential employees and prepare development plans with them. Develop a group Succession Plan. Interview and recommend new hires, take necessary disciplinary action as required.
  • Maintain intensive communication with key suppliers including Kltd. Negotiate key specification and delivery issues.
  • Work with Engineering Managers and other Chief Engineers to prioritize and coordinate all development and product improvement schedules within man-power and budget limitations.
  • Develop electronics project plans and schedules which support the overall project schedule. Motivate subordinates to meet schedule.
  • Oversee the preparation of Design Concept and Quality Confirmation Check Sheets to ensure that customer requirements are met and targets achieved. Monitor and review testing of mining truck systems and components and take appropriate countermeasures.
  • Promote continuous improvement of the products themselves and the design process. Measure performance, analyze data and utilize PDCA cycles to improve. Establish criteria for the development, operation, and maintenance of mining trucks. Ensure that past failures are not incorporated into new designs.
  • Develop and maintain state-of-the-art knowledge about mining trucks and allied equipment - especially electronic and software. Understand competitive equipment features, performance, cost of operation and overhaul life, etc. Recommend improvements in mining truck features and functions. Make suggestions and motivate employees to conceive "Unrivaled Product Features".
  • Assist Product Marketing and Product Support by preparation of draft manuals, product bulletins, specifications, etc. Create Part and Service News Bulletins as required to support the Service group.
  • Support the Company's EEO effort and take appropriate action to prevent harassment of employees.


  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree (Mechanical, Electrical, Computer or related field). Masters' degree in Engineering or Business is desirable.
  • Approximately 10 years of experience in design for mining trucks or similar mobile equipment
  • Communication skill (written and verbal) is important within the group and with other groups.
  • Confidence and presentation skill is required for technical presentations to Engineering management as well as other departments such as Quality Assurance, Manufacturing, Product Support and suppliers and customers.
  • Motivational skill is required to maintain schedules and to convince personnel to make necessary adjustments when there are setbacks.
  • A sense of ownership, accountability and urgency are essential to meet schedules. There must be a clear understanding that Product Development is much more akin to an assembly line process than it is to Research. Targets must be set for performance, weight, cost, ROI and eventual market share. The success of the project is measured by attainment of these targets within the schedule.
  • Thorough understanding of business-related issues such as budgeting cost control, critical path, ROI, etc. Proficiency is required in project control software, presentation software, etc.
  • Quality Control concepts such as Pareto Diagrams, Cause and Effect Diagrams, Failure Mode and Effect Analysis, Statistics, Control Charts, etc.
  • Thorough knowledge of Komatsu Development Procedure, design and test criteria, Engineering Standards (KES), quality practices/processes.
  • Detailed knowledge of competitor's equipment, capabilities, shortcomings and customer's expectations and trends.
  • Ability and willingness to travel, including international travel.

Additional Information

Expert-level knowledge in the specialized areas of Electrical and electronic systems used on large mining trucks and similar equipment. General knowledge of, hydraulics, engine and cooling systems, power train and gearing, ISO and MSHA regulations and recommended practices.

Detailed knowledge in the specialized areas of structural design and testing, Finite Element Analysis, CAD systems, hydraulics, electrical systems, operator ergonomics, ISO and MSHA regulations and recommended practices. In addition, knowledge of mining practices, serviceability and maintenance procedures, operator preferences, etc. must be incorporated into the design.

Expert-level knowledge in the specialized areas of Software and Hardware Electronics relating to the collection, monitoring, analysis and display of vehicle data used on large mining trucks. General knowledge of, hydraulics, electrical systems, engine and cooling systems, power train and gearing, ISO and MSHA regulations and recommended practices.

Expert-level knowledge in the specialized areas of Hydraulics, Brakes and Suspensions including lubricants, seals, valves and bearings and ISO and MSHA regulations and recommended practices. General knowledge of electrical systems, engineer and cooling systems, power train and gearing relevant to the design of systems used in large mining trucks,
