In Mississauga, you’ll find Vale’s Base Metals Technology Development team; a group of highly trained engineers and scientists working to improve Vale’s competitive edge and support its growth strategies by coming up with safer and more environmentally responsible technology.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking an Operational Excellence Consultant to join our Operational Excellence team in Toronto, ON. This is a fixed term position (18 months).

The Operational Excellence Consultant acts a coach and mentor and is responsible for driving the implementation and consolidation of Vale Production System (VPS) in the business units through training, assessments and process consulting to achieve Operational Excellence.

In this position, you will:
  • Responsible for implementing Management System/Continuous improvement practices in Corporate Areas/Matrix Organization
  • Be responsible for Facilitating Strategy Deployment process with the Senior Leadership Team
  • Provide Guidelines related to KPI Definitions and Goal Setting to the Leadership of Matrix Functions
  • Responsible for deployment of Lean Office/Agile best practices in Corporate Environment.
  • Develop plant/area personnel to implement VPS in order to enhance processes’ efficiency;
  • Provide in-house training portfolio to develop leaders and teams and foster a sustainable culture of excellence;
  • Understand and adapt tactics of implementation to the cultural diversity in different regions and jurisdictions;
  • Support the dissemination of best practices in the company, updating the management model when applicable;
  • Lead the VPS assessments across the business;
  • Recommend Operational Excellence deployment approaches by Plant/Area;
  • Work with Plant/Area personnel to qualitatively and quantitatively measure the baseline maturity and/or cultural readiness for Operational Excellence. Note: plant personnel to receive coaching and development may require both coaching up, across and down within a hierarchy;
  • Coordinate and implement CI Programs - Six Sigma, Lean, Quality Control Circles (QCC) and 5S, recognizing best results aiming at leveraging the engagement and capturing significant cost reductions and productivity increases;
  • Work directly with plant personnel to develop them (through soft and hard skill knowledge transfer) to be able to expose problems, determine root cause and implement actions to prevent reoccurrence;
  • Recommend where to implement VPS “pilots/model lines” within a plant/area –based on business results desired as well as cultural readiness;
  • Support the review of the Vale Production System, according to the corporate, operational and best practices demands identified through external assessments and benchmarking;
  • Identify the most appropriate tool(s) to use to support the improvements. Recommend the necessary training for the team involved, and identify and support the monitoring of the necessary metrics to baseline, monitor and control results;
  • Coach and mentor Operational Excellence staff in Leadership/employee behaviors that are required to enable a continuous improvement mindset
  • Coordinate external benchmarking to improve the management model and tools;
  • Verify compliance with VPS.
  • Responsible for implementing Management System/Continuous improvement practices in Corporate Areas/Matrix Organization
  • Responsible for deployment of Lean Office/Agile best practices in Corporate Environment.


About You
  • A minimum of 8-10 years of related experience preferred.
  • An Post-secondary degree in a related field such as Production, Mine or Mechanical Engineer or Business Administration or equivalent relevant experience
  • Experience with Management Systems Implementation – Routine Management, Strategy Deployment, etc.
  • Continuous improvement / Lean certification.
  • Experience in consulting and/or strategic business planning would be considered an asset
