Job No: PVG202010289

Location: Vancouver, BC

Welcome to the Brucejack Mine!

We are Pretivm – a Canadian mining company, headquartered in Vancouver, BC and the proud owner of the Brucejack Gold Mine. Brucejack Mine is a 3,800 tonnes-per-day high-grade gold underground mine located in northwestern British Columbia, approximately 65 kilometers north of Stewart.

As an employer, we are committed to ensuring a safe, comfortable and diverse working environment. We are working closely with our neighbours – the local communities and First Nations - to provide employment.

About the Opportunity:

We currently have exciting opportunity for a Modelling Geologist. This position is located at Pretium Exploration Inc.'s “Pretivm” Vancouver office in British Columbia.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced modelling geologist to be a part of the geological and resource modelling team at Pretium Resources Inc. (Pretivm). The role will entail geological modelling focused on the high grade Brucejack epithermal gold-silver deposit.

This position, which forms part of Geology team, will be based at Pretivm’s Corporate Head Office in Vancouver, with occasional travel to the Brucejack mine site in Northwestern, British Columbia. The Modelling Geologist position reports directly to the Resource Manager. The Modelling Geologist will be required to maintain constant communication with the mine geology team at the Brucejack Mine to ensure maximum information sharing.

The primary purpose of the Modelling Geologist is generating and iteratively refining three dimensional (3D) geological models for the high grade Brucejack deposit. Existing models will require review and stress-testing, prior to refining. Modelling will include (but not be limited to) the use of Reflex’s Leapfrog Geo and ioGAS software, as well as Maptek Vulcan mining software. Aspects of modelling will include data quality assessment (in addition to that already being conducted by our Database and Resource Geologists), lithology, alteration, veining, mineralization, geochemistry, and structure. The Modelling Geologist will need to plan and conduct site visits periodically to ground truth observations, and to share information and learnings with the mine geology and engineering teams at the Brucejack Mine (both informally, through team discussions, and formally, via presentations). The Modelling Geologist will work closely with, and take direction from Pretivm’s Resource Manager, as the product of the Modelling Geologist’s work is a key input to the resource modelling and mine planning process. The Modelling Geologist will be required to register, if not already so accredited, as a Professional Geoscientist with EGBC, and will be required to attend conferences and geological courses to augment and increase their understanding of hydrothermal geological systems (with particular emphasis on epithermal gold-rich systems in island arc environments).

The role requires strong commitment to the highest levels of professionalism, communication, health and safety standards, and environmental protection.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties:

  • Conduct periodic database and other data quality reviews. Highlight and correct any issues, including providing feedback to relevant parties. This checking is additional to that conducted by the Resource Geologist to provide an additional level of quality control.
  • Review all available information pertaining to the Brucejack Intermediate Sulphidation Epithermal Gold-Silver Deposit, including all existing hypotheses and 3D models.
  • Stress-test existing 3D models and highlight areas for additional work, with particular awareness of mining schedules, mine model update requirements, and brownfields exploration requirements.
  • Conduct iterative updating and, where necessary, reinterpretation of existing 3D geological and domain models, incorporating lithological, structural, geochemical, alteration, mineralization, and other relevant information from surface and infill drilling, as well as from underground mapping.
  • Liaise with Pretivm’s Corporate Resource Geologist regarding the incorporation of stochastic simulation interpretations of grade probability into domain definition models.
  • Work with Pretivm’s Chief Exploration Geologist and site-based mine geologists in developing and testing new models and theories on the geology of the deposit, including controls on mineralization, structural models, and regional scale exploration targets.
  • Communicate key learnings from advances in knowledge of the deposit-scale geology and controls on mineralization to the resource modeling and exploration geology teams, in addition to the underground mine geology and engineering teams. This will include informal discussions, formal presentations, as well as memoranda, reports, and other formal peer-reviewed documentation.
  • Maintain a professional work environment and encourage technical excellence within the Brucejack Geology division, as well as Pretivm-wide.
  • Ensure technical capabilities are current through relevant conference and technical course attendance. Provide feedback on key learnings from technical events in summary e-mail, memorandum, and/or report format.
  • Provide mentorship to Pretivm’s junior geological personnel.
  • Understand and ensure compliance with Pretivm safety policies and governmental safety regulations including those of the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources (MEMPR) and WorksafeBC.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Accountability:

  • Through direction from the Resource Manager, this position is responsible for 3D geological and domain modelling of the Brucejack high grade gold-silver epithermal system for Pretium Resources Inc. The work will be largely conducted in an office environment (Vancouver Head Office) but has a requirement for periodic site-based underground and surface work. Consequently, the Modelling Geologist will be responsible for liaising with the relevant mine and safety personnel when working at the Brucejack Mine (e.g., Mine Manager, Mine Logistics, Technical Services Team, Mining Contractor, Avalanche Technicians, etc.).

Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Position requirements include, but are not limited to:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology (post-graduate degree preferred) complimented with five years to eight years of relevant modelling experience.
  • Registration as a P.Geo. with EGBC (or equivalent) professional designation (including applications in progress) is required.
  • Solid background in economic geology, with advanced geological and geochemical analysis and interpretation skills and a sound structural geology skillset.
  • Understanding and recognition of different mineralisation models and geological processes.
  • Advanced computer software knowledge and experience (Vulcan or equivalent, Leapfrog Geo, ioGAS, database management, and Microsoft office products)
  • Proven experience in managing data flow from sample to analysis, including ability to assess data quality and ensure database integrity.
  • Flexibility in geological thinking, with a high level of innovation and ability to take the initiative when necessary.
  • Understanding of economic parameters of mining operations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, community and the environment.
  • Knowledge of workplace health and safety requirements and procedures.
  • Cross cultural awareness with an understanding and sensitivity of the challenges associated with differences in cultural and economic backgrounds.
  • Environmental awareness with a commitment to minimize impacts inside and outside of the mine’s footprint.
  • Strong commitment to teamwork and collaboration.
  • High level written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Strong time management, and decision-making skills.

Additional Information:

  • Occasional work in a remote field environment, including surface and underground work, with exposure to hazards typical of alpine environments as well as those typical of an underground mine environment (moving equipment, temperature variations, fumes, and humidity, for example).
  • Pretivm promotes a drug and alcohol-free work environment at its Brucejack mine site through the use of mandatory pre-employment drug testing and with cause drug testing.
  • Any samples that the Modelling Geologist wants to collect for geological work (e.g., petrographic work, geochronology, whole rock geochemistry, etc.) will need be accompanied by the relevant documentation for removal from site.

What we can offer you:

All of our team members are also rewarded with a host of great benefits, including:

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience, skills, and qualifications.
