About the role

Rio Tinto Marine (RTM) is committed to the long-term sustainability of ocean transport through safe, efficient and responsible shipping. RTM strives to continually enhance the safety and efficiency of its Owned and Chartered fleet through innovation, collaboration, & partnerships with industry stakeholders. Transition to low-/ zero-carbon fuels and technology is a key challenge for the maritime industry and RTM is committed to act as an enabler for this transition.

As Marine Environment Principal Advisor you will­ add value to the group through developing and leading activities and initiatives having an influence on the environmental performance of our Marine Operations.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Ensuring that RTM and its fleet are always aware of, adequately coached and compliant with the existing environmental regulatory standards
  • Having a clear understanding and awareness of the regulatory landscape and preparing the fleet for upcoming environmental regulatory changes
  • Tracking, communicating and coordinating the timely and accurate reporting of environmental performance against identified KPI's, both internally and externally
  • Leading the design, development and evolution of RTM's Climate Change and Sustainability strategy and the roadmap to reduce GHG emissions across the fleet
  • Charting the roadmap for the transition to low-/ zero carbon fuels through identification and trials of technology aimed at improving the environmental performance of our assets and operations
  • Collaboration with RT ports to identify and deploy tools and measures to improve the operational efficiency of the fleet.
  • Liaison with the RT Climate Change Centre of Excellence (CoE)
  • Ensuring the resilience of RTM's Emergency Response Plan for environmental incidents through regular review and engagement with sites, SME's and the wider shipping fleet
  • Leading the investigation and analysis of any environmental incidents or non-compliance

About you

To be successfully considered for this role:
  • You are passionate about the environment and environmental issues
  • You have at least 4 yrs. of relevant experience in similar roles driving environmental performance and compliance
  • You possess a relevant environmental certification and/or experience and can demonstrate a clear understanding and ability to find solutions that achieve business goals in a sustainable manner
  • You possess excellent collaboration and communication skills and have the ability to build and manage interpersonal relationships
  • You are an avid learner with excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
  • Exposure to Marine Operations is preferable though not mandatory

Commercial incorporates and utilises the knowledge and capabilities of the global Sales & Marketing, Procurement, and Marine & Logistics organisations, supported by the Market Analysis, Commercial Treasury and other functions, to ensure our approach to business is driven by a commercially-astute and innovative mind-set.

The Commercial group came under the leadership of the newly appointed chief commercial officer on 1 January 2018.
