The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Tailings & Water Management Coordinator to join our team in Voisey’s Bay, NL. This is a full-time permanent position.

This position is based at the Voisey’s Bay mine site in Labrador, a fly-in fly-out operation. This position is on a two week on, two week off rotation.

The Tailings and Water Management Coordinator will coordinate and perform activities to ensure that Vale Newfoundland and Labrador is able to meet all requirements (legal, regulatory, corporate) related to the management of tailings and water systems.

In this position, you will:
  • Provide technical guidance and support of all activities (e.g. development, maintenance, training, etc.) related to the Voisey's Bay Tailings and Water Management System to ensure company conformance with the Mining Association of Canada (MAC) guidelines, as part of the Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) initiative;
  • Coordinate all spring run-off activities, including the organization of equipment, supplies, and personnel, and allocate these resources according to risk;
  • Oversee and coordinate all activities related to effluent treatment and discharge to the natural environment ensuring compliance with regulatory and management system requirements;
  • Develop and maintain technical databases related to tailings deposition and management, water treatment and management;
  • Develop short and long-term operating plans for the tailings impoundment facility and water management infrastructure;
  • Coordinate the completion of maintenance activities (e.g. pipeline fusion, sedimentation pond repair, etc.) related to the management of tailings and water systems;
  • Assist in the preparation of capital appropriation requests for tailings and water management-related capital projects;
  • Connect with regulatory authorities regarding tailings and water management-related plans, issues, and operating permit matters.

About You
  • Post-secondary degree/diploma in a related technical field (i.e., environmental engineering, process engineering, industrial engineering, chemical engineering);
  • Minimum of 3 years’ in a related position, within a process related industrial setting;
  • Previous water treatment and tailings facility management experience is an asset;
  • Previous experience in a fly in/fly out environment is an asset;
  • Sound field and hands-on mechanical skills are a must;
  • Strong interpersonal skills: ability to influence and work with others to achieve defined targets;
  • Ability to coordinate a diverse group of individuals (both internal and external to the company);
  • Familiarity with Mining Association of Canada (MAC) guidelines for tailings facility management;
  • Knowledge of the chemical and process fundamentals as it pertains to effluent treatment and tailings deposition;
  • Ability to develop and carry out test programs and other technical investigations;
  • Strong analytical skills (compilation, analysis and interpretation of data);
  • Technical report writing skills;
  • Intermediate level computer skills, specifically with MS Office Suite.
