Who we're looking for

This role will provide health and safety leadership and support to the Red Chris Project team. The Safety Advisor - Projects will adapt and design health and safety solutions that are stage appropriate, fit for purpose and align with Newcrest's health and safety management systems. Provide coaching and leadership to build health and safety capacity and capability within the Project team and the contractor-based work force.

Reporting to the Superintendent - Health and Safety, responsibilities of this position would include:
  • Supporting the Safety Management System ensuring a safety-first work culture
  • Ensuring standard work procedures and safe systems of work are understood, monitored and report on non-compliance
  • Ensuring personnel are adequately trained to safely complete work requirements
  • Attend safety/toolbox meetings and communicate expectations with a focus of continued improvement of the Health and Safety Management System and addressing concerns
  • Facilitate the alignment of health and safety objectives and management approach between the Projects team and site
  • Provide a high level of safety expertise, coaching and leadership to project leaders and contracted work force leaders
  • Develop reports on compliance with CCM targets and workforce engagement
  • Participate in operational and major hazard risk assessments and audit activities for Red Chris Projects

We are looking for someone with an understanding of the risks of underground mining operations and construction projects combined with knowledge of health and safety legislation, regulations, policies, and practices. Our ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years experience in construction and underground mining, supplemented by a diploma in occupational health and safety or relevant university degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. You will have or be eligible to obtain a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP).

In addition to the above, you will have:
  • Excellent communication skills to engage employees and contractors in our safety-first culture
  • Considerable experience implementing and supporting safety programs, workplace inspections, audits and incident investigations
  • Strong analytical and research skills and a high degree of integrity and professionalism
  • Sound knowledge and ability to interpret and apply relevant regulations and legislation such as Workers Compensation Act, the WorkSafe BC Occupational Health and Safety Regulations and Guidelines, and BC Emergency Program Act
