MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the Vent / Survey Coordinator, the Mine Technician is responsible for short-term ventilation issues, including planning and troubleshooting. The Mine Technician is expected to complete underground ventilation surveys and inspections of all active mining areas and travel ways at least once per week, to keep updated with the ventilation status of active areas, to respond to ventilation deficiencies, and to conduct quality control assessments of ventilation installations. The Mine Technician will provide ventilation plans to the Short-Term and Mid-Term Planners and the Operations team in an accurate and timely manner. In addition, effective working relationships must be maintained with the Operations team to ensure adequate ventilation conditions are maintained in compliance with Mines Regulations. Responsibilities will include:

  • Promote safe working practices and complete 5-point safety cards, as well as FLRA's (Field Level Risk Assessments) for non-routine hazardous tasks. 5-point safety card to be completed on every underground trip and submitted to the Vent / Survey Coordinator;
  • Review 3-month plans to develop a self-managed ventilation work plan over the same period;
  • Determine from the 3-month plan where ventilation installations are needed on any given mining level and ensure that vent supply stock (hard duct, silencers, VIV's (Variable inlet vein), starters, fans) is maintained accordingly. Issue all necessary ventilation installation instructions in a timely manner;
  • Discuss changes in ventilation systems with the Vent / Survey Coordinator, Mine Planners and Designers as early as possible to allow an effective evaluation of all possible options for effective ventilation changes;
  • Compile and issue high-quality instructions and drawings for installation or repair of auxiliary fans and ducting, bulkheads, doors, regulators, etc. in order to communicate necessary ventilation work to Operations;
  • Undertake frequent underground tours, either alone or with Operations Supervisors, in order to carry out ventilation inspections of active mine areas and travel ways;
  • Conduct Quality Assessment/Quality Control audits of installed ventilation systems, conditions, etc. as required. Make ventilation adjustments by changing fan VFD (variable frequency drive) or regulator settings when required or rope off headings if ventilation is insufficient and alert the Area Supervisor ASAP;
  • Respond to ventilation deficiency reports by visiting the area ASAP, liaising with the Area Supervisor on a plan of action, and issuing a formal written ventilation instruction;
  • Maintain accurate, written records of trips underground;
  • On a weekly basis, visit all active work areas to perform vent surveys, compile the airflow readings and update the associated level prints in Deswik with latest asbuilt data;
  • Monthly monitoring of primary ventilation system;
  • Monitoring of mine air heating system during winter months daily ;
  • At the end of each week, submit vent surveys to the Vent / Survey Coordinator for checking and distribute weekly vent surveys to all stakeholders;
  • Check and maintain functionality of ventilation survey instruments - send out for repair or annual calibration when required. Ensure that functioning backup instruments are available;
  • Assist with training of new team members; and
  • Assist with updating ventilation procedures and standards.

WAGE:

CAD $70,000.00 to $80,000.00 per annum based on a 40 hour work week. Eligibility for annual salary increase and bonus. Based on company and corporate production (could be 0-3% increase site wide) Bonus also based on company and personal performance

EDUCATION:

Mining Engineering Technology Diploma

EXPERIENCE & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Minimum one year underground mining experience;
  • Demonstrated knowledge in ventilation instrumentation and monitoring tasks;
  • Proficient in underground ventilation surveys and inspections;
  • Proven experience with Deswik and ventilation modelling software;
  • Proficient in Oracle system and MS office;
  • Excellent data entry skills, and attention to detail;
  • The ability to work independently - highly self-motivated;
  • High level multi-tasking and organization;
  • Good interpersonal skills;
  • A team orientated approach within the workforce and the Hemlo Operations;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Strong sense of leadership; and
  • Demonstrated good attendance and performance records with the ability to maintain these same standards.
