New Afton Mine

Situated 10 kilometers west of picturesque Kamloops, British Columbia, the New Afton Mine is an underground gold and copper producing site.

Kamloops is a city of 90,000 people, located 350 kilometers east of Vancouver. The area provides the opportunity to live and work in a vibrant community with its own university and within easy reach of world class ski resorts, championship golf courses, mountain biking trails, popular recreational lakes, and award-winning vineyards.

About the Role

Schedule: 5x2, Monday- Friday

Position Reports To: Environment Superintendent

Position Overview: We currently have an exciting opportunity for a student to join our New Afton team for an 8-month work term commencing in May 2021. This position will report to the Environmental Superintendent, and provide assistance to the Environment, Lands and Permitting Team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support site operations through environmental awareness and leadership initiatives
  • Assist in maintaining ISO14001 certification and compliance with TSM protocols
  • Assist in updating and maintaining an environmental database
  • Provide field assistance for environmental monitoring programs
  • Assist with drafting reports and presentations
  • Complete environmental inspections


Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in third or fourth year of an Undergraduate program for Bachelor of Science, or a Master’s program for Environmental Science or Natural Resource Science.
  • A basic understanding of natural resource management, environmental processes;
  • Demonstrated advanced-level proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including: Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook is essential;
  • Preference will be given to candidates with excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated leadership ability;
  • Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience collecting, managing and reviewing environmental data, inclusive of technical report writing;
  • The ability to work both independently and in a team;
  • Applicants must possess a valid Driver’s License and have access to personal transportation.


Other Requirements

Candidates will be required to participate in a comprehensive qualification process, including:
  • Successful completion of pre-placement functional screen
  • Provide proof of a valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada
  • Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements


Compensation

A competitive salary will be provided. This is not a camp operation and therefore the successful candidate will be required to relocate to the Kamloops area or travel and accommodation will be the responsibility of the successful applicant.
