Reporting to the Manager, Geoscience and Field Operations and Health and Safety Lead, the Health and Safety Coordinator will coordinate health and safety (H&S) for all on-site operations at a remote, helicopter-only accessible site, providing support on the development and management of the project H&S programs to ensure operational compliance to safety standards, and risk mitigation in order to promote a safety focused culture. The Health and Safety Coordinator will cross-shift the Safety Lead, with responsibilities for planning, managing, documenting and reporting on health and safety activities, trainings, procedures, policies, commitments, incidents, and statistics for the site; promoting a safety-focused culture based on courageous safety leadership; and establishing, maintaining and managing a safety committee for the site.

This position is based out of the Galore Creek Uhtlān Fly-in Access Camp in Northwestern BC and in Vancouver, British Columbia during off-season. This candidate will be on site working on a rotational basis from May – September. The successful candidate for this defined-term position (12 months) with Galore Creek would have a start date in March, 2021.

Located in northwestern British Columbia, Galore Creek is one of the world’s largest undeveloped porphyry copper-gold-silver deposits. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, lead by example and foster a proactive safety and sustainability culture based on the common values of health, safety, environment, and communities shared by the asset owners (Teck and Newmont).
  • Work closely with the site team to conduct operational risk assessments, develop controls to manage risks, build the site safety culture and advance risk management strategies, and at all times hold the safety of employees as the highest priority. Promote a positive reporting culture on site.
    • Conduct research to identify potential risks associated with equipment and the physical environment; identify ways to mitigate risks; create emergency response plans.
    • Working with the Safety Lead, draft, document and implement policies and procedures concerning health and safety, and ensure proper distribution of all updated documentation.
    • Document workplace incidents and investigations, and ensure that records are up to date.
    • Compile and submit monthly, quarterly and annual health and safety reports; report leading and lagging indicators of health and safety activities, conditions, and incidents using appropriate systems and tools; ensure that Senior Management, appropriate regulatory agencies, and employees are alerted in a timely manner of all medical aids, injuries, high-potential incidents, potentially fatal events, and fatalities.
    • Working with the Safety Lead, research, procure and provide appropriate safety training and personal protective equipment for staff, contractors and visitors to the site and the office.
    • Document health and safety statistics and develop strategies on how to achieve specific health and safety target levels in collaboration with site safety representatives.
    • Understand, embrace and champion GCMC’s Courageous Safety Leadership Culture.
    • Continuously seek opportunities to recognize health and safety hazards and work to mitigate and manage associated risks in the workplace.
    • Consistently follow GCMC’s health & safety policies and practices and demonstrate safety leadership to others.
    • Understand the principles of Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Risk Mitigation.
    • Continuously monitor various risk factors associated with project execution and implement appropriate corrective actions as required.
    • Make courageous decisions to stop or defer work if health and safety conditions are deemed unsatisfactory.
    • Proactively resolve or seek support as appropriate to resolve safety hazards and issues.

KEY COMPETENCIES, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or diploma in a relevant discipline is desirable, as are specific safety trainings such as First Aid, WHMIS, TDG, Confined Spaces, Food Safe, and others.
  • Greater than 2 years’ experience in mineral exploration, drill programs and working in remote helicopter-supported environments.
  • Experience with hands-on implementation of values-based approaches to industrial safety at remote sites.
  • Ability to recognize health and safety hazards and manage associated risks.
  • Experience and background to recognize potential hazards and risks associated with climates and terrains related to the project site.
  • Experience with implementation of health and safety programs and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) is considered an asset.
  • Courage to make decisions to stop or defer work if health and safety conditions are deemed unsatisfactory.
  • Capacity to proactively resolve or seek support as appropriate to resolve safety hazards and issues.
  • Experience with reporting leading and lagging indicators of health and safety activities/conditions/incidents using appropriate systems and tools is considered an asset.
  • Lead by example; consistently model GCMC’s health & safety policies and practices, and demonstrate safety leadership to others.
  • Experience with the implementation of audit/peer review processes targeting identified Health and Safety gaps and controls used in mitigation of high-risk activities is considered an asset.
  • Continuously monitor best practice methodologies and work with the Safety Lead to implement as appropriate.
  • Ability to proactively identify community issues/opportunities and seek early involvement of community specialists as appropriate.
  • Understand the regulatory framework British Columbia as it relates to health and safety at exploration and mine sites and in the workplace.
  • Understand the principles of Safety Management System, Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, Risk Mitigation, Critical Controls, Hierarchy of Controls and use of Risk Control Register.
  • Ability to leverage an understanding and experience of the business of exploration and resource sector with health and safety best practices to design appropriate exploration safety programs.
  • Experience with conducting high-level assessments of health and safety risks in order to identify potential hazards and risks associated with the project equipment, camp, office, physical environments and stages of exploration including drilling and other geological/engineering activities.
  • Ability to develop, document, and deliver hazard and risk assessments and emergency response plans.
  • Ability to analyze incidents using recognized methods like ICAM to understand and recommend corrective actions as well as improvements to health and safety practices and procedures.
